Since 1985, the Australian String Quartet (ASQ) has created unforgettable string quartet performances for audiences around the world.

The Australian String Quartet is Australia's pre-eminent string quartet organisation and Quartet-in-Residence at Adelaide University 🎻 We have been creating unforgettable string quartet experiences for people around the world since 1985 🌏 The ASQ is Dale Barltrop (violin), Francesca Hiew (violin), Christopher Cartlidge (viola) and Michael Dahlenburg (cello). Dedicated to musical excellence with a

distinctly Australian flavour, we aim to create chemistry and amplify intimacy through experiences that connect people with string quartet repertoire. From our home base at the University of Adelaide, we reach out across the world to engage people with an outstanding program of performances, workshops, digital content, commissions and education projects. Our distinct sound is enhanced by a matched set of 18th century Guadagnini instruments, handcrafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini between c.1743 and 1784 in Turin and Piacenza, Italy. These precious instruments are on loan for our exclusive use through the generosity of UKARIA. Dale Barltrop plays a 1784 Guadagnini Violin, Turin

The first leg of our national tour of 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘯 is complete ✨

It has been so wonderful to see everyone enjoying this program of music by Elizabeth Younan, Haydn, Prokofiev and Clara Schumann.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the brilliant Jenny Khafagi, who stepped in to cover for Francesca Hiew while Francesca took time off with her family due to a family emergency. Jenny's artistry was a joy to share with everyone, and we are so pleased that audiences in Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne could experience her exceptional talents. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank Jenny 👏

We are so thrilled that Francesca is back and joins us for the final two performances of 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘯 in South Australia on Tue 9 June at Adelaide University's Elder Hall and Wed 10 June at UKARIA Cultural Centre ✨

We are thrilled to share that our recording of Vanessa Perica’s String Quartet No. 1, 𝘕𝘰 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘴 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 has been nominated for Best Independent Classical Album or EP at the 2026 AIR Awards 🏆

Collaborating with Vanessa to bring this deeply moving, autobiographical work to life was a deeply special experience for us. To have the recording nominated alongside such a calibre of independent Australian music is a wonderful milestone as the AIR Awards celebrate their 20th anniversary. Thank you to Vanessa for her extraordinary vision, and to everyone who has listened and shared in this journey with us.

The commissioning of this work, including the recording, was made possible thanks to the Australian String Quartet Richard Divall Australian Music Fund.

What an inspiring weekend of supporting the next generation of Australian string quartets! ✨

Over the last weekend, eight emerging string quartets came together for Adelaide University's Elder Conservatorium String Quartet Weekend, intensively workshopping string quartet repertoire with us, violists Keith Crellin and Stephen King, and violinist Elizabeth Layton. The two days culminated in a public concert at Elder Hall, where these talented ensembles showcased their hard work. A big congratulations to everyone involved, and we look forward to doing it again later this year! 👏

It’s not only a footy fan’s Gather Round in Adelaide this weekend… we’re here at Adelaide University’s Elder Conservatorium, gathering with seven emerging string quartets for the first of two String Quartet Weekends in 2026! It’s an incredibly inspiring time of masterclasses, workshops and rehearsals culminating in a public concert by the quartets in Elder Hall today at 5pm! See you there!
