Australian String Quartet

Australian String Quartet Since 1985, the Australian String Quartet (ASQ) has created unforgettable string quartet performances for audiences around the world.

The Australian String Quartet is Australia's pre-eminent string quartet organisation and Quartet-in-Residence at Adelaide University ๐ŸŽป We have been creating unforgettable string quartet experiences for people around the world since 1985 ๐ŸŒ The ASQ is Dale Barltrop (violin), Francesca Hiew (violin), Christopher Cartlidge (viola) and Michael Dahlenburg (cello). Dedicated to musical excellence with a

distinctly Australian flavour, we aim to create chemistry and amplify intimacy through experiences that connect people with string quartet repertoire. From our home base at the University of Adelaide, we reach out across the world to engage people with an outstanding program of performances, workshops, digital content, commissions and education projects. Our distinct sound is enhanced by a matched set of 18th century Guadagnini instruments, handcrafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini between c.1743 and 1784 in Turin and Piacenza, Italy. These precious instruments are on loan for our exclusive use through the generosity of UKARIA. Dale Barltrop plays a 1784 Guadagnini Violin, Turin
Francesca Hiew plays a 1748-49 Guadagnini Violin, Piacenza
Chris Cartlidge plays a 1783 Guadagnini Viola, Turin
Michael Dahlenburg plays a c.1743 Guadagnini Violoncello, Piacenza โ€˜Ngeringaโ€™

The Staircase to the Moon is a natural optical illusion caused by the rising full moon reflecting off the exposed tidal mudflats in the Western Australian town of Broome. This phenomenon occurs two to three days a month from March to October, lasting for about 10โ€“15 minutes shortly after moonrise. After experiencing this phenomenon herself, shamisen virtuoso Noriko Tadano wrote ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜”๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ.

When the Australian String Quartet return to UKARIA in August, they will join forces with lifetime member of the Goldner String Quartet, Julian Smiles, for a performance of Franz Schubert's String Quintet in C.

ASQ cellist Michael Dahlenburg reflects, 'It is a true privilege to play a masterwork such as Schubertโ€™s Quintet for two cellos. A truly dynamic work, it covers all the ground from excitement to pathos. Getting the opportunity to perform it alongside Julian Smiles โ€“ Australian chamber music royalty โ€“ is a rare and distinct treat that will delight audiences as much as it delights the performers. The music is full of colour, verve and joy, a true celebration of the genre. I cannot wait to share this timeless masterpiece with the UKARIA audience.'
