Science in the Pub Adelaide

Science in the Pub Adelaide SciPub will bring together critical thinkers of all backgrounds in the shared interest of understanding, criticizing, debating, and learning about science.

Mass media, such as television and the internet, provide a seemingly limitless source of information, but determining which sources of information are credible can be difficult. The monthly Science in the Pub gatherings will explore hot topics in science, with the goal of helping you to sort through and evaluate the evidence available for the topic. Each month we will bring together a panel of peo

ple with specific expertise about the topic to help you form a rational, evidence-based opinion about the topic. The setting of the monthly gatherings will be very informal. You can come-and-go as you please (whenever you need a refill) and there is no cost to attend. Each panellist will spend about 10 minutes talking about their experience with the topic and present a summary of the data available for the topic. After this brief introduction to the topic, we will hold an open discussion that is driven largely by questions from the audience.

It’s on tonight!
If you’re curious about how medical devices actually make it from an idea to something clinicians can rely on, join us for Science in the Pub this evening.

Three Adelaide researchers will take us inside the real journey: problem-solving, prototyping, testing, safety, regulation and the long path to clinical trust.

A great session for anyone interested in medtech, innovation or health research.

Join us tonight at the Adelaide Irish Club - IAA.

What happens after a medical device is built - how does it actually reach the people who need it?

Dr Yue Hui works at the frontier of biomaterials and nanomedicine developing soft electronics, hydrogels and nano-scale systems that could transform how advanced therapies are delivered.

Tonight, he’ll show how innovations in materials science are reshaping what’s possible in medical devices and therapeutics and what it takes to turn cutting-edge lab discoveries into technologies that can be manufactured, regulated and used safely in the real world.

Join us this Friday at the Adelaide Irish Club - IAA.

What does it take to bring a new medical device into the world when the stakes are as high as human health?

Tomorrow night, Professor Sarah Robertson AO will share how rigorous testing, safety evaluation and clinical evidence shape the journey from early concept to something that can genuinely improve patient outcomes.

Sarah is one of Australia’s most respected reproductive health researchers, with decades of experience navigating the complex pathway between discovery, regulation and real-world impact. She understands better than most how careful, methodical science protects patients - and why good ideas still need to earn clinical trust.

If you’re curious about how medical devices are validated, approved and adopted in practice, Sarah’s perspective is indispensable.

How does a real world medical problem become an actual device you can hold in your hand?

This Friday night, Stephen Blakeney from the Medical Device Partnering Program (Flinders University) will take us inside that journey - from the first spark of an idea, through prototyping, testing, redesigning, and the long road to something clinicians can trust.

Stephen works on the medtech frontline: he helps researchers, clinicians and startups turn a ‘someone should fix this’ moment into real devices that solve real problems. If you’ve ever wondered how medical devices actually get made - not in theory, but in practice - Stephen will reveal all.

Join us this Friday at the Adelaide Irish Club - IAA.

Medicine has come a long way since Mary Shelley warned us about the dangers of science.

Join us this Friday at Science in the Pub as we explore how today’s medical science is now safely packaged to deliver real health benefits - and reflect on how Shelley’s haunting vision has been dispelled. 🙂

Free event - all welcome.
