I am sharing this from a dear friend - and I have know T since she was a Primary school kid and she has a drive like no other - She sticks to her beliefs - ok maybe not the 16 kids but she has it in spades!
Hi friends! šš
Sorry for the long post⦠but if you stick with me, thereās a prize at the end! š
If youāve missed my previous posts, Taya has been quietly building her own clothing brand to help raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes, and as her mum, I couldnāt be prouder. š„¹š
Her hoodies feature the cutest little design she created of her beloved Nina the mini Dachshund, complete with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and insulin pump.
Theyāre honestly gorgeous. The first release sold out in just a couple of days, and everyone who has received one has been raving about the quality. Without any mum bias⦠theyāre the softest, snuggliest hoodies Iāve ever worn!
Taya was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes just over two years ago, and itās completely changed her life.
Before her diagnosis, I didnāt really understand the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and Iām guessing many others donāt either.
Type 1 diabetes isnāt caused by diet or lifestyle. Itās an autoimmune disease where the immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. There is currently no cure, and people with Type 1 need self-administered insulin for the rest of their lives.
Every meal, every snack, every bit of exercise, every illness, every nightās sleep⦠it all affects blood sugar levels and requires constant monitoring and decision-making. To stay alive, Taya either has to inject insulin multiple times a day or wear an insulin pump and glucose monitor 24/7.
Imagine being a young woman and being unable to take those medical devices off.
On top of that, there are regular medical reviews, ongoing driverās licence assessments, and the long-term risks to eyesight, kidneys, circulation and so much more if blood sugars arenāt kept within range. It also adds another layer of complexity when thinking about future pregnancies and starting a familyāsomething thatās always been important to Taya.
(Although sheās scaled back from wanting the 16 babies she talked about as a little girl⦠weāre now aiming for two! š
)
But if you know Taya, youāll know she doesnāt let things define her.
Instead of letting Type 1 diabetes beat her, sheās decided to use it to make a difference through her new clothing brand, Normal Redefined.
On 28 August, sheāll be abseiling down the side of the InterContinental Hotel in Adelaide as part of the Breakthrough T1D fundraiser. š±
Even more amazingly, sheās donating all of her profit from every hoodie sold to her fundraising campaign.
š And hereās the fun partā¦
Every hoodie purchased before midnight tonight (11.59pm to be sure!) goes into the draw to win TWO tickets to abseil alongside Taya!
So if youāve been thinking about grabbing a hoodie, nowās the perfect time. Youāll be supporting an incredible young woman, helping fund Type 1 diabetes research, and you might even find yourself hanging off the side of a building! š
