🌟 Student Spotlight – Bruno & Hua 🌟

Some people discover dancing.

Others spend a lifetime living it.

For Bruno, dance has been a remarkable journey spanning more than twenty years - a journey filled with friendship, adventure, competition, performance, travel, community service and, above all, a deep love for movement and music.

It all began when members of his family gifted him a package of dance lessons.

Those first lessons changed everything.

It was there that Bruno first met a young dance teacher named Michelle - long before she founded QuickSteps Dance Studio. In one of his earliest showcases, Bruno performed a Samba routine with Michelle and another teacher.

"It was great fun dancing with two lovely ladies at the same time," he recalls with a smile.

But something much deeper happened during those early weeks.

Bruno rediscovered what he describes as the emotional magic of movement to music and the connection shared between dance partners.

The experience was so powerful that, even today, he says he is still searching for and occasionally reliving that feeling whenever he steps onto the dance floor.

Over the following years, Bruno explored an extraordinary range of dance styles. His journey took him through several well-known Adelaide dance studios where he studied Argentine Tango, New Vogue, Cuban Latin Dance and Ballroom dancing, continuously challenging himself to learn, improve and grow.

Dance soon became more than a hobby.

It became a passion.

Throughout the years, Bruno performed numerous showcase routines with his teachers, not only for the excitement of performing but also in pursuit of excellence in each style he studied. He has carefully kept recordings of those performances and hopes that one day his grandchildren might watch them and say:

πŸ’« "Wow, look at Grandpa dancing like that at his age!"

Among the highlights of his dance journey was competing in Dancesport competitions around Australia. Entering teacher-student events and later Masters competitions, Bruno achieved several first-place results - something he describes as both surprising and humbling.

One particularly special chapter took him all the way to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he spent an entire month studying Argentine Tango with world-class teachers while immersing himself in the culture, history and spirit of the dance.

His love for dancing has also connected him with community causes.

One of his earliest routines was performed at a fundraising event supporting mothers and babies in Timor-Leste at Adelaide's Festival Theatre Complex. Another memorable achievement was receiving awards for Best Male Performance and Best Choreography for a Bolero routine performed to music that was considered an unusual choice at the time.

Dance even followed Bruno beyond South Australia.

When he and Hua moved to Shepparton in regional Victoria for several years before retirement, dance briefly took on a new role. Bruno became friends with a local studio owner and spent time teaching Argentine Tango. Together with fellow dancers, he organised an invitational Tango event that received coverage in the local newspaper, featuring a photograph of Bruno and Hua in a classic Tango pose.

Eventually, Bruno and Hua returned to Adelaide and joined the QuickSteps family.

For Bruno, it was a chance to reconnect with Michelle and many familiar faces from his early dance years.

For Hua, it marked the beginning of her own dance journey.

Learning Western music and dance styles was not easy at first, but through dedication and determination, Hua has developed into a wonderful dancer and follower. She is passionate about continually improving her style, technique and skills and brings enormous enthusiasm to every lesson.

Together, Bruno and Hua have embraced everything QuickSteps offers.

They have participated in performances, Dance Challenges, social events, dance parties and group activities. Bruno especially treasures performances with Jam and Natalia, while both of them speak warmly about the friendships they have formed within the QuickSteps community.

One particularly meaningful project was the Dance and Music Festival at Thorndon Park Reserve, organised by Bruno through Rotary and supported by QuickSteps. He has also been involved in community programs introducing dance to people living with Parkinson's disease and mobility challenges, helping others experience the physical, emotional and social benefits that dance can provide.

And of course, who could forget the unforgettable QuickSteps trip to Africa, so carefully organised by Seb - a journey filled with friendship, adventure and shared memories.

Today, Bruno and Hua continue dancing not only because they love it, but because they believe in its power.

They have experienced firsthand how dance improves emotional wellbeing, confidence, mobility, cognition and overall quality of life.

For them, dancing is not about age.

It is not about trophies.
It is not even about perfect technique.
It is about connection.
Connection to music.
Connection to people.
Connection to life itself.

Thank you, Bruno and Hua, for sharing your remarkable journey and for bringing so much passion, warmth, wisdom and inspiration to the QuickSteps family. ❀️

🌟 Student Spotlight – Jude & Lisa Teakle 🌟

Some of the best adventures in life begin with a gift.

For Jude and Lisa, that gift came in 2015 when their daughter surprised them with a voucher for four dance lessons at QuickSteps.

Jude was excited from the very first lesson.

Lisa, on the other hand, needed a little more convincing.

More than ten years later, they are still dancing together.

Like many Australians, their first introduction to ballroom dancing happened at school. Years later, they performed what they describe as an "awkward rumba" for their wedding dance and occasionally took lessons here and there. But it wasn't until they joined QuickSteps that dancing became a regular and meaningful part of their lives.

What attracted them most wasn't competition or performance.

It was the opportunity to share something fun together.

Social dancing gave them a new way to connect, learn, laugh and enjoy life's celebrations. They especially appreciate the structured approach to learning dance, which means that whenever music starts playing, they can do much more than simply stand and nod along to the beat!

Over the past decade, Jude and Lisa have come a long way.

They still laugh when they remember attending their very first Winter Ball only a few weeks after starting at QuickSteps, desperately trying to remember the famous Rumba Safety Box.

Today, they feel comfortable stepping onto a dance floor whenever the opportunity arises.

Some of their most treasured memories have come through dance:

✨ Dancing on QuickSteps tours
✨ Dancing the Cha Cha Cha at the legendary Moulin Rouge in Paris
✨ Dancing to live music at parties
✨ Dancing on cruise ships while travelling the world

And they still have a dream waiting to be fulfilled:

πŸ’« To dance a Viennese Waltz in Vienna.

For Jude and Lisa, dancing is not about reaching a finish line.

It's about continuing to learn, improve and enjoy the journey together.

Outside of dancing, they share a love of travel and making the most of everything Adelaide has to offer. Although both were born and raised in South Australia, they spent more than twenty years living in other parts of Australia and around the world.

Their experiences have taught them something special:

Adelaide has a wonderful social scene, and dancing is one of its hidden gems – if you know where to look.

Their story is a beautiful reminder that dancing isn't just about steps.

It's about friendship, connection, adventure, confidence and creating memories together.

Thank you, Jude and Lisa, for being such a valued part of the QuickSteps family for more than a decade. ❀️

🌟 Student Spotlight – Chris Dippenaar & Sarah Withers 🌟

Some journeys begin with a dream.

Others begin with a condition.

For Chris, learning to dance started when Sarah told him he needed to learn how to dance before he could attend her group performance at the QuickSteps Summer Ball in 2021.

Challenge accepted.

At the time, Chris had virtually no dance experience apart from a little South African two-step called Sokkie. What began as a way to support Sarah soon became a passion of his own.

Sarah's dance story started much earlier.

Growing up in the country, she always dreamed of dancing but never had the opportunity. When friends introduced her to salsa nights and Lindy Hop in her twenties, she was instantly hooked. Although life's responsibilities occasionally pulled her away from the dance floor, dancing remained a constant source of happiness and self-expression.

Since joining QuickSteps, both Chris and Sarah have built impressive dance journeys.

Chris has learned to lead a wide range of styles, including Salsa, Cha-Cha, Rumba, Tango, Foxtrot, Waltz and Bachata. One of the things he loves most about dancing is discovering that there is always another layer to learn. Not necessarily new steps, but deeper levels of technique, timing, connection and expression.

Sarah remembers the excitement of progressing through the QuickSteps syllabus and the confidence she gained from social dancing. One of her greatest achievements has been stepping outside her comfort zone to perform in group routines and teacher showcases.

Standing on stage under bright lights wasn't something that came naturally to her.

But the experience transformed more than just her dancing.

"It actually gave me more confidence in my work life too," she says.

Today, Sarah has fallen in love with West Coast Swing and hopes to travel to more festivals, continue learning, social dancing and competing in Jack & Jill competitions. She also has a goal that many partners can relate to:

To convince Chris to add West Coast Swing to his already impressive dance repertoire!

What makes their story particularly special is that dancing has become something they can enjoy together. Whether it's a wedding, birthday celebration, social dance night or simply another lesson at QuickSteps, dancing has created shared experiences, memories and countless moments of joy.

Chris often says he wishes he had started dancing much earlier in life.

Sarah says she would dance every day if she could.

Together, they remind us that it's never too late to start, never too late to learn, and never too late to discover something that brings happiness into your life.

Thank you, Chris and Sarah, for being such a wonderful part of the QuickSteps family. ❀️
