AFTERNOONS OF SOLITUDE

Doors @ 3:30 pm
Film @ 4 pm

Moviejuice and The Mercury are thrilled to be presenting AFTERNOONS OF SOLITUDE, the newest film by Catalan slow cinema auteur Albert Serra (PACIFICTION, THE DEATH OF LOUIS XIV), courtesy of Plainwater Films.

A hypnotic, uncompromisingly brutal documentary study of Peruvian bullfighter Andrés Roca Rey, Serra’s trademark ritualistic long takes and gift for dry black comedy craft a pointed, disturbing portrait of macho masculinity as equal parts ridiculous and grotesque performance. A major work by a major international filmmaker, screening for one afternoon only. Featuring an exclusive recorded conversation between Albert Serra and Dr. Daniel Fairfax!

MAJOR CONTENT WARNING: this film features repeated, sustained and graphic documentary images of intense animal cruelty.

ANIMATION TRANSFORMED

From Idris Kellermann Williams, the madman who brought you ANIMATION IN TRANSFORMATION....

Do you ever ask yourself if photorealism is all that animation should aspire to?

Do you feel imprisoned by the rigidly geometric dictates of linear perspective?

Do you wonder if Across the Spider-verse is really the most experimentation that can be contained in a mainstream narrative animated feature?

Well look no further! Prepare yourself for four great animated and animation-adjacent features that look like nothing you’ve seen before! Where last year’s Animation in Transformation programme explored visual metamorphosis, this programme showcases how filmmakers have negotiated flatness in animation aesthetics as cinema is transformed by technological change, and how animation aesthetics have been transferred into live-action cinema. These four films all use flattened images and compositing to create fantastical worlds which foreground their artifice in different ways, with surprising aesthetic connections emerging across them.

All films will feature introductions by Idris!!

Single tickets - $12

Four Film Pass - $30
