On September 29th, moviejuice and The Mercury are pleased to present two films by Sydney-based filmmaker James Vaughan: his acclaimed debut feature FRIENDS AND STRANGERS, and the short film YOU LIKE IT, I LOVE IT starring Kirin J Callinan.

Through barbed satire of middle-class ennui and Australian cultural rot, Vaughan has carved out a name as one of contemporary Australian cinema's most vital voices. With deadpan humour and striking visual stylings, his work studies the spectres of colonial violence that persist beneath the vapid surface of urbane settler existence.

James Vaughan's films have received international recognition, with YOU LIKE IT, I LOVE IT premiering at the 2013 Berlinale, and FRIENDS AND STRANGERS premiering in competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2021 and receiving the Special Jury Prize at Jeonju Film Festival.

Ever since seeing FRIENDS AND STRANGERS at its single Adelaide screening at Wallis Mitcham back in 2022, we have held it up as a guiding light - proof that modern Australian cinema can be smart, funny and formally exciting.

Now, with the support of The Mercury, we bring this revelation to you, with a special in-person Q&A with James Vaughan and FRIENDS AND STRANGERS cinematographer Dimitri Zaunders (The Golden Spurtle). A movie to show you that though this country may be rotten, its art need not be. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll hurl.

Shot with spry handheld cinematography that wrings out every bit of suffering, comedy and pathos from its increasingly hostile social collisions, THE BIRTHDAY TRIP delivers on its delicious promise to excoriate the priveliged Sydney elite in razor-sharp detail. Yet despite the very funny takedown of class and the rot that pervades much of Australia's wealthy and white, this debut feature from James Robert Woods teases outout the sadness and disatissfaction lurking beneath the discreet charm of the bourgeoisie, revealing a humanistic edge through its masterful control of dialogue and character.

Following the film, moviejuice is thrilled to be hosting an in-person Q&A with director James Robert Woods and producer Stephanie Jane Day, the filmmaking team behind THE BIRTHDAY TRIP, which is currently playing in limited release nationwide and handily one of the best Australian films of the year.

A hypnotic, uncompromisingly brutal documentary study of Peruvian bullfighter Andrés Roca Rey, Serra’s trademark ritualistic long takes and gift for dry black comedy craft a pointed, disturbing portrait of macho masculinity as equal parts ridiculous and grotesque performance. A major work by a major international filmmaker, screening for one afternoon only. Featuring an exclusive recorded conversation between Albert Serra and Dr. Daniel Fairfax!
