The Journey to Come is Adelaide jazz musician and composer Johnny Turner’s debut album, featuring some of Adelaide’s finest young musicians. The album showcases Turner’s distinctive compositional voice through a variety of genres, in collaboration with the improvisational expression of the involved artists.

Rising Adelaide jazz composer and musician Johnny Turner is proud to announce the release of his debut album, The Journey to Come, arriving in late November 2025 on all streaming services, and in CD format (available on the door). This album is a striking showcase of Johnny’s compositional voice - one that spans swing and blues, to more contemporary sounds.

Recorded over two days in July at Wizard Tones Studios with engineer James Brown, the album features a handpicked ensemble of some of Adelaide’s most exciting young musicians: Oliver Farnan (trombone), Hugo Evans (guitar), Edmund Black (piano), Daniel Cavallaro (bass), and Jackson Mack (drums). A special guest appearance was made by Thomas Voss (trombone), who will not be performing at the album launch due to being overseas!

This album launch will showcase all 7 original tunes featured on the album, as well as a collection of other pieces. Come down and support some young local jazz, and enjoy an evening of jazz.

This exciting group co-led by guitarist James Muller and bassist Lyndon Gray are about to record their second album and after successful album release tour earlier this year to now plan to debut their new tunes to the Hal’s Hall audience. Joined by alto saxophonist Tom Noonan and Sydney drummer Tim Firth, the band will present their brand new compositions full of rhythmic and harmonic fascinations that have inspired this current crop of tunes and providing plenty of room for thrilling improvisation and group interplay.

“The Exhibits… confirms that Muller’s powers are as impressive as ever. If anything, his playing in 2025 reveals the high degree of maturity he now possesses. He is fortunate to have discovered in Adelaide the superb bassist Lyndon Gray, whose five extremely interesting compositions sustain the album, and whose brilliant improvisations give it real distinction. Such a fine album suggests that this outstanding quartet is now carrying the flag for jazz in Adelaide” The Australian, May 2025

Sydney pianist/organist Steve Barry and Danish expat guitarist Kristian Borring co-lead this powerhouse trio. Hailed as “one of Australia’s most inventive and accomplished composer/improvisers” (Loudmouth), Barry’s work oscillates between contemporary jazz, cross-cultural practice and contemporary art music with a lyrical melodicism and distinctly modern harmonic sensibility recently heard on his acclaimed album In the Waves (2023). Borring earned his reputation in London as “one of the most tasteful and accomplished guitarists on the scene” (Bebop Spoken Here), and has frequently performed in clubs and at festivals throughout the UK and Europe. He was recently cited as “a serious post-bop wizard” in Vintage Guitars Magazine (USA) upon releasing his latest album “Earth Matters” (2022) with the group Number J***y.

Rooted in the blues and amplified by influences from Brazil to Bartok, the music speaks to the photosynthetic power and dynamic colour of the Hammond organ and the liquid improvisatory agility of the trio format.

Steve Barry – Hammond organ

Kristian Borring – guitar

Steve Neville – drums

Dr Steve Barry is the Program Leader for Jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. His recent album In The Waves features drumming luminary Eric Harland (USA) and was praised by the Sydney Morning Herald as “...the finest instalment to date of the pianist’s bristling musical intelligence, rhythmic mutability, melodic flair and compositional gifts.”

Ben Lerner - Alto Saxophone
Nick Jansen - Bass
George Greenhill - Drums

Featuring Special Guest James Muller

Since forming at the Sydney Conservatorium in 2020; Ben Lerner, Nick Jansen and George Greenhill’s trio has become a mainstay of the Sydney jazz scene. With a specific focus on the study of great composers as well as often unknown and under-appreciated material, the trio also has become a workshopping space for original music, both by members of the band, and from other bandleaders projects. The group have comprised the bands of Mike Nock, Steve Barry, Wilbur Whitta, and many more in various combinations. The trio travelled to New York City in early 2024 on a scholarship to study as a group and individually with the likes of Fred Hersch, Kevin Hays, Ron Carter, Mark Turner and Kendrick Scott. The band are now releasing their debut album, ‘Play Trio’, with this performance being a part of a larger tour of Australia and New Zealand to promote its release. With Greenhill relocating to New York City last year to pursue his Masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music, and with Lerner to follow in July, this is perhaps the trio’s first and last appearance in Adelaide for a considerable time. This performance also features a special new collaboration with Australian luminary James Muller.
