Of all the best things to do in March, telling a story at Tenx9 has to rank highest. 'Odd one out' is the theme - come and tell the story of when you tried your best not to fit in and it worked, or tried your best to fit in and failed so badly. And if you don't have a story but have spent your life wondering how everyone else seems to get life right when you just can't, come and hear the stories and feel less alone...

Welcome to A Star is Torn.

Greg Fleet's dramatic adaptation of the classic A STAR IS BORN takes place in the world of stand up comedy. Inspired by the four classic films, Fleet's play explores the rocky world of love and talent, addiction and fame, laughter and tears.

Greg Fleet plays a one time king of comedy slowly but noisily drinking and drugging his way out of the limelight when he meets Krutika Harale. She plays the young ambitious comic on her way up. She too is brilliant but she is also kind, at the start of her career and soon to be the next big thing. They meet in the middle and what follows is equal parts heartbreak and hilarity. The play not only explores the above themes, but also race relations, the cancel culture and what happens when you wake up one day and you are not the bright young thing you once were, but something else. It's very much a laugh, laugh, cry kind of thing. We want people to laugh..and laugh...and cry. A story of pain and triumph, joy and defeat (not necessarily in that order).

We think it's important because while it set in and around the ever more popular world of stand up comedy, it is at its heart a love story, and love, at least to us, is rather important. It also asks all manner of questions that are crucial in a modern world. What can we or can't we talk about on stage? Are you wasting your time trying to save someone from addiction? Are old people really wise, or do we just hope they are? While we all want to help our friends, at what point does the cost of that help become just too high? And in the end, what is stronger, love or ambition?
