Happy National Wattle Day &
Happy Spring! 🌼💚

Nature Creative loves celebrating our community's stunning display of local Golden Wattle (Acacia Baileyana, Kaurna = Mirnu Wirra) each year! Artists are encouraged to notice the bursts of yellow hope popping up all throughout their neighbourhood, telling us that spring is here 🌱💛

Whilst we were creating our Stobie poles (more to come on that), we were also creating our own paints!
Using golden wattle blooms & an ancient paint-making tempura technique with egg yolks & egg whites!

We experimented with Japanese ink to create these beautiful little designs 🫶🏼

Golden Wattle is special because;
💛 September 1st is National Wattle Day
💛 It’s the floral emblem of Australia
💛 Symbolising resilience & renewal, as is the first to regenerate after bush fire
💛 Indigenous Australians had many uses for Wattle, including boomerangs, spears, and shields. It was used to make flour, as an antiseptic & even for producing sweet toffee treats by soaking its gum in water & honey! 😋
💛 Ant colonies carry the blooms through their intricate underground systems, which is why so many have spread 🐜 (thank you to an Art Club Dad for that cool fact!)

Have you been noticing the spring wattle blooms in your area? Don’t miss them; in a few weeks they will be gone!

🌈 Whilst every living being is different, on this sunny Monday morning, I’m driven to share these 12 wonderful strengths that I’m honoured to witness in so many autistic individuals 🫶🏼
What’s your favourite autistic strength?
Mine has to be extraordinary creativity… oh & genuine kindness… & authenticity! Actually I can’t pick a favourite, there’s too many! 🤩💚

* Community Art Announcement *

Nature Creative’s four Art Clubs (46 x kids aged 6-14yo) have been super busy the past two weeks working on an exciting community arts project…

We’re very excited to announce that together we are creating the latest stobie pole murals for Main Road, Blackwood!

We have 7 panels in total across 4 stobie poles, one for each class & age group. And a lot of ideas, imagination, planning & design is being invested...

We have themes of local wildlife, flora & fauna, scooters & MTB, day & night, hills creeks & sunsets, forest & flowering skies 💚

Beginning with local stobie pole art study & reflection, brainstorming ‘what connects you to nature within your neighbourhood’. We then created individual stobie pole designs, each artist selecting their favourite drawing then collaboratively piecing it together like a puzzle to create a story. When each team was happy with their design we added colour to create our final draft before beginning the real deal on panels with exterior paints this week!

It’s already been a huge project & I’m blown away with how well everyone has brought their ideas together. The team inclusivity @ bonding is so beautiful to witness. Together, creating an impactful image of what makes our neighbourhood & community so special 💚🌱🫶🏼

I can’t wait to show you the end results! Watch this sidewalk space 👀

🍰🧚 Birthday Parties 🎂🥳
With Tatiana, queen of the fairies @ Nature Creative Glenalta Art Studio!

Did you know that Nature Creative loves to offer children’s art parties? Over these past school holidays I had the absolute joy of facilitating a 6yo Fairy Door Party, which included a fairy door nature hunt! And a 7yo self portrait paint party 🎨🎉

Both were full of magic, creativity, laughter, fun & pure happiness, rated by the birthday girls as “infinity/10!!”
⭐️ 💫🤩

Scroll along to see photos of me hosting my very first children’s fairy parties 23 years ago - this fairies still got it (just a little less purple these days 🤣)

🐾 💚 Meet Amber, studio companion, therapy dog, pet portrait model & my bestest friend in the world 💚🐾

One of my favourite things about facilitating Nature Creative’s 4x Community Art Clubs is that I get to immerse myself in creative practice. Otherwise, as a super busy mum, I mightn’t find the time!
Usually, I create a demo before a class, so I’ve had experience with the subject & mediums, to ensure my idea for a class will work out. But with last terms Pet Portraits I was mindful that my students might compare their artwork to that of an adult’s, so I held off.

So inspired by their end result, I had to create my own! So here’s Amber, in gouache on canvas, my Goldie with a heart of gold 💛

I don’t post about Amber often as I’m just so protective of her! She’s not a formally trained therapy dog, but with the amount of love she’s been given, she acts like one! Some of my clients say they visit the studio purely to see her 😂 she’s soooo co-regulating, magical and wonderful. Painting her was very special & I experienced why my students pet portraits meant so much to them 💚

How did I find time? Dr Carla van Laar Creative Arts Therapy Creative Flow Open Studio online sessions of course! Just $10/drop in session is all you need to get your creative flow flowing & everyone is welcome! Make sure you check it out on Carla’s social pages & join me! You’ll find me there Wednesday mornings 🙂🙏🌱

What if feelings don’t have labels?

This month I had the absolute pleasure of attending a Professional Development Workshop with the wonderful Arts Therapist Chrissy Foreman from Artuition Studio, www.artuition.com.au - Thank you Chrissy! And to Dr Megan Neff from neurodivergent_insights for the excellent information & resources 🙏💚

I gained a deeper understanding of Alexithymia, which can show up when we may not have words for our emotions. Not because we don’t experience emotions, but because we may struggle to describe or label our felt body states. Sometimes this is due to overwhelm, limiting executive functioning or interoceptive differences.

❔Did you know that 50-80% of autistics experience Alexithymia?
❔& 22-40% of ADHDers do also?
(Neurodiversion website resource 2025)

Therefore, as a Creative Arts Therapist, I always consider using a more neuroaffirming approach to checking in on how someone is feeling. Instead of asking “How are you?” Or “Where do you feel that in your body?”, I can use creative arts processes to explore the phenomenology of complex emotional states…

Such as (practiced in this training session), the colour, shape, memory, image, texture & temperature of a felt sense. To create a visual, because a picture can speak 1000 unspoken words. Like the visual example above that I shared of my sense of ‘contentment’.

Perhaps even more powerful & descriptive than words alone? 😍💚
