LADY MACDUFF
Wisdom - to leave his wife, to leave his babes,
His mansion, and his titles in a place
From whence himself does fly? He loves us not,
He wants the natural touch, for the poor wren,
The most diminutive of birds, will fight,
Her young ones in her nest, against the owl.
All is the fear and nothing is the love;
As little is the wisdom, where the flight
So runs against all reason.

The scene of Lady MacDuff, child, & Ross is a huge performance moment and challenge - as a director a scene I have both loved and feared! I have never directed it with a male child as per the script. I have employed a female child, partially because of doubling of cast, which has brought a unique quality to the child’s sass and spirit; or deleted the child altogether, which has turned a painful and amazing spotlight on the strength in fragility of Lady MacDuff.

I would love to hear your experience of this scene - there is no right or wrong - and how it lived and spoke first you.

Thoughts blacke, hands apt,
Drugges fit, and Time agreeing:
Confederate season, else, no Creature seeing:
Thou mixture ranke, of Midnight Weeds collected,
With Hecats Ban, thrice blasted, thrice infected,

Such brilliant words & such an amazing character- one of my favourites to study & perform. A very complex piece, but so rewarding.

RII is so rich with beautiful phases and capturing of this unique soul. Loving watching my current students working with this, and the contrasting Bolingbroke.

Sweet Gertrude, leave us two, for we have closely sent for Hamlet hither, that she, as ‘twere by accident, May here affront Ophelia. Her father and myself, we’ll so bestow ourselves that, seeing unseen, we may of their encounter frankly judge, and gather by Hamlet, as she is behaved, if ‘it be the affliction of her love or no that this she suffers for.

‘The Taming of the Shrew’. A play that constantly torments & challenges me. It is unforgivingly traumatic but as a rule we try to forgive it, finding the wonderful passages, and looking for the comedy. But it is dark & brutal.

I’m guilty of that. I’ve trawled the meanest corners of it, but still played elsewhere for laughs.

Would we perform it the same, if it was not the work of Shakespeare?

How do I like my Shakespeare? Traditionally respectfully, but told with a modern sensibility. Something to reach today’s audience but not disrespecting them that they cannot appreciate historical times. Something that makes new converts but runs the risk of annoying pedants.
