In this work, Sequin explored the relationship between glamour, identity, light, and transformation through approximately 40,000–50,000 hand-set Swarovski crystals. She has always been deeply inspired by Emilio Pucci — not only by his bold colour palettes and hypnotic geometric patterns, but also by the sense of freedom, sensuality, and movement that runs through his designs. There is something emotionally uplifting and almost psychedelic in the way Pucci used colour and rhythm, and she wanted to translate that energy into crystal and light.

The fragmented patterns within the figure reference both digital culture and mosaic traditions, transforming the subject into something between a fashion icon, an energetic presence, and a contemporary goddess. She uses reflective crystal almost as a living material, allowing the artwork to continuously shift and change as the viewer moves around it. For her, the piece is ultimately about radiance — emotionally, psychologically, and physically — and the desire to create work that feels joyful, immersive, and unapologetically alive.

It was a potent choice to paint and crystallize a portrait of Elizabeth Taylor to honor her as a timeless icon of beauty, talent, and resilience. Taylor’s extraordinary life, marked by her stunning performances and bold personality, made her a defining figure in Hollywood.

By using a crystallisation technique, I sought to represent the complexity of her character; each crystal facet symbolising different dimensions of her journey, from her roles on screen to her impactful humanitarian work. This transformation not only highlights her glamour but also reflects the intricate interplay of light and shadow in her life.

Through this artwork, I aim to capture the essence of Elizabeth Taylor as a woman who continually reinvented herself and challenged societal norms. My hope is that viewers will be inspired by her legacy, appreciating the artistry and depth behind both her image and the medium itself. In crystallizing her portrait, I celebrate her as an enduring muse and a symbol of strength and beauty in an ever-changing world.
