Right in time for the “Decade of the Ocean”, which the United Nations proclaimed, High Seas opens our eyes to the beauty and sensitivity to the finite expanses of the Oceans. Mermaids as a personification of this mysterious organism, beautiful and dangerous animals and plants, an oil rig and a human are featured. If you look close enough, you will find an anchor as a symbol of hope at one of the tumblers.
Almost 400 years ago, French philosopher Blaise Pascal said „The least movement is of importance to all nature. The entire ocean is affected by a pebble.“ So let’s make sure we don’t let the ocean become acidic, or angry at us, Louise Rath the designer says. In German, the word “sauer” means both acidic and angry.

Every detail you see is engraved entirely by hand even the finest lines, shaped with a tiny copper wheel.
It takes years of training before an artisan is trusted with this technique, and reaching the highest level means mastering intricate compositions from animals and delicate natural forms to figures inspired by ancient mythology.
A single engraving can require dozens of hours of meticulous work, with the smallest details built slowly, line by line. What looks effortless is, in fact, years of knowledge held in the hands of a master.

A selection of objects from Lobmeyr’s historic collection is currently on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as part of the exhibition Orientalism: Between Fact and Fantasy.

Created during the nineteenth century, these works embody a moment when European decorative arts were profoundly inspired by the craftsmanship, ornament, and visual language of the Islamic world. The exhibition traces this remarkable cultural exchange and its enduring influence on art and design an artistic dialogue that continues to resonate until today.
