What a privilege it was yesterday to hear La Llorona brought to life by the remarkable voice of soprano Patricia Trujano, accompanied on the piano by the exceptional Juan Carlos Paniagua.

Their interpretation of this iconic Mexican song in Spanish, Zapotec, and German was a deeply moving celebration of language, identity, and culture. Music is art — and art brings us together, transcending borders, languages, and differences.

It was a truly beautiful way to bring the 2026 edition of Verano Vienés to a close. This year, Mexico had the strongest presence in our programme, with Oaxaca standing out in a particularly meaningful way.

We are deeply grateful to Patricia and Juan Carlos for giving us such a powerful and unforgettable final moment. What a fitting way to close this edition — through music, through art, and through the voices that connect us.

Resilience, climate change and collective hope across borders!!
Three Films from Latin America 🎬

Verano Vienés brings together three films that ask, from different landscapes, what it means to defend the land — and the life built on it.

🎞️ MANCOLONA (short film) — dir. Ángel Linares, Mexico A young man sets out to document his region's struggles from deep within the Mayan jungle, showing how a camera becomes a tool of territorial defense.

🎞️ WITH OUR WOMEN'S HANDS (short film) Carmen, a Honduran coffee farmer and member of the all-women cooperative AMPROCAL, confronts the impact of climate change on her livelihood — determined that her family won't be the last to live off this land.

Both short films are screened in collaboration with

🎬 THE DREAMS WE SHARE (feature film) — debut by director Valentina Leduc Navarro. A vision of hope in a world reimagined through collective action, stories of community organizing that unfold in the forests of Froxan, Galicia (Spain); Lûtzerath (Germany) and Juan C. Bonilla, municipality of Puebla (Mexico).
This journey takes us to different parts of the world where diverse peoples challenged the system and united around a common goal: protecting life.

Verano Vienés is deeply honored and proud to present Cinema Grandes Miradas, a special showcase of short films made by children and for children, celebrating the extraordinary creativity, imagination, and unique ways of seeing the world of our youngest filmmakers.

This wonderful selection is presented in collaboration with Oftálmica Kids – Festival de Cine Infantil, an independent children’s film festival from Veracruz, Mexico, doing beautiful work to make cinema a tool for creative freedom, learning, expression, and community building among children and young people.

Through several short films, young creators share their stories in Spanish and in their own languages, including Indigenous languages that carry the memory, identity, and richness of their communities. With English subtitles, these voices and stories will travel all the way to Vienna.

We are especially happy to bring this work​s to Vienna. At Verano Vienés, we believe in the enormous creative power of children and in the importance of giving their ideas, voices, and imaginations a place to be seen and celebrated. We make this showcase with so much love, and we are grateful to Oftálmica Kids for allowing us to share their wonderful work with our audience.

For the second year, the Instituto Cultural de México en Viena is generously opening its doors to Verano Vienés and giving us a beautiful space to celebrate children’s cinema. We are truly grateful for their continued support.

Come join us for an afternoon of stories, imagination, languages, and cinema created through the eyes of children.

A wonderful night in Vienna. 🇲🇽🌎

On 7 August, we opened the second edition of Verano Vienés – The Latin American Photo & Film Fest at Günter Wien, surrounded by an extraordinary constellation of Latin American women artists, guests and friends.

The evening began with a welcome by Eloina Viveros, Founder & Festival Director, and Frederick Platt, General Coordinator, followed by the Opening Address by H.E. José Antonio Zabalgoitia, Ambassador of the United Mexican States to Austria, the Slovak Republic, the Republic of Slovenia and the United Nations Office at Vienna.

This year, Mexico is our Guest Country, following the extraordinary participation of Mexican artists in our international open call.

We were deeply moved to welcome Ornella Cinara Marchese Asís (Uruguay), Second Prize Winner; Amiyarai Valbuena Casas (Colombia), Honourable Mention; and Iris Chantal Carrillo López (Mexico). Three women whose work speaks of identity, territory, culture and the traditions they help preserve through their artistic practice.

The evening also brought the beautiful voices of Mexican music through mezzo-soprano Liz Lozano, with works by María Grever and Manuel M. Ponce, followed by the screening of Sketches in the Sky (Trazos de Cielo) by Ligia Cortés, filmed in Veracruz and spoken in Spanish and Totonac.

It was an incredibly emotional night, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us and made this beginning so special.
A very special thank you to Günter Wien for being such generous and wonderful hosts and for opening their doors to Latin American art and culture.

🎬 TONIGHT AT VERANO VIENÉS

As part of tonight’s Opening Ceremony, we are honoured to present Sketches in the Sky, directed by Ligia Cortés.

In the surroundings of El Tajín, Veracruz, Mexico, several schools of Papantla Flyers keep alive the Totonac tradition of this extraordinary ritual dance. Dana, Said, Jairo and Sarahí — four children — invite us into its magic as they prepare to become flyers themselves.

Through their stories and the legends passed down through generations, they tell us how those who learn to fly may one day help save their region from drought. To fly, they must overcome fear, develop discipline and keep dreaming.

The girls also question a tradition historically reserved for men, taking their place as heirs and guardians of a living tradition and of a profound connection with the land.

We are deeply excited to share this story with our audience in Vienna tonight.

Between mountains, rivers, forests and cities, we recognise a geography that is not only drawn by borders, but by memory, shared histories and the people who carry them forward.

Verano Vienés is a space where these stories meet — where photography opens a window to Latin America through the voices of those who inhabit it.

Tomorrow, we are delighted to open the doors to the International Photography Exhibition of the Verano Vienés 2026 Competition, bringing together 16 Latin American artists and celebrating the diversity of perspectives that shape contemporary Latin American photography.
