Adriana Czernin‘s solo show ‚American Flowers‘ is on view until July 4, 2026!

From the very beginning, Adriana Czernin’s work has moved between seduction and irritation. The first encounter with the artist in 2000—initially as part of a group exhibition shown in Antwerp and Vienna, and shortly thereafter in her first solo exhibition on the upper floor of the gallery—already revealed a central theme of her work: the exploration of form and structure, beauty and irritation, and the tensions between them. […]

The new works continue these developments. Floral elements return—not as motifs in the classical sense, but as rhythmic movements within the composition. Flowers appear multiplied, arranged in a serial pattern. At the same time, the works possess a new openness: the foreground and background do not merge, but assert themselves in relation to one another. Elements emerge, recede, and overlap without relinquishing their individuality.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Július Koller ✨ Born on May 28, 1939 in Piešťany.

Koller’s work continues to reveal new layers, foster intergenerational dialogue, and challenge established perspectives through play, resistance, and radical imagination.

Currently on view at the gallery:
Július Koller: Univerzálny Fantastický Otáznik (U.F.O.)
until July 4, 2026!

“I have tried to resolve the contradiction between utopia and real life,” Koller once explained. This approach is also evident in a simple pencil drawing he dedicated to his colleague Dalibor Chatrný. In it, the question mark transforms into a loop and returns to itself. Through the repeated use of the dot beneath the curved form, the artist subtly alludes to the original act of questioning.

Július Koller, born 1939 in Piestany (SK), died 2007 in Bratislava (SK).

Július Koller: Univerzálny Fantastický Otáznik (U.F.O.)

On view until July 4, 2026!

In the political climate of 1968 and 1969, the question mark (Otáznik) became a central motif for Július Koller, which he developed in various forms into an essential component of his work. The invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops and the abrupt end to the Prague Spring’s process of liberation had a decisive influence on this approach. For Koller, the question mark became an expression of a constant questioning of situations, objects and life itself.

At the same time, Július Koller developed the symbol further: it transformed into duplicates reminiscent of a Möbius strip, revealing an infinite, playful form of doubt and questioning.

Koller applied this strategy across a wide variety of materials and contexts. For instance, he translated the ornamental forms of the painted decoration on traditional wooden houses in the High Tatras into an ornamental sequence of question marks, executed using the same artisanal technique.

While earlier phases of her work were often characterized by structural density, these pieces allow for a greater degree of instability and movement. The visual language appears more open, less controlled. […]

American Flowers appears less as a return to earlier phases of her work than as a transformation of a formal vocabulary developed over a long period of time. The paintings bear traces of her past works while simultaneously opening up a new space—a space in which ornamentic, floral structures, and painterly freedom come into a fragile, vibrant balance.
