'Like' us to get the latest informations, reviews, special offers, show photos, backstage news etc. It was founded in 1963 by the Austrian director Franz Schafranek and his American wife, Ruth Brinkmann, an actress and graduate of the Yale University School of Drama. In 1997 their daughter Julia Schafranek assumed the mantle and r

esponsibilities of Artistic Executive Director. Originally intended as a summer theatre for English-speaking tourists, it won immediate acceptance by the Viennese public and extended its initial season to offer a year-round programme. By 1974 the theatre had established itself as a valued cultural institution, World and European premieres brought distinction to the company. Through its international recognition, the theatre has attracted a distinguished roster of well-known stage and screen personalities, among them Joan Fontaine, Anthony Quinn, Princess Grace of Monaco, Leslie Nielsen, Larry Hagman, Linda Gray and Judi Dench. Vienna’s English Theatre offers year-round productions of English and American classics, thrillers, comedies and farces as well as contemporary works. Tickets are available from € 25,- to € 48,-

Set Shout-Out✨

This summer we want to look back at the incredible season we’ve had by appreciating the amazing people that designed our productions 🎭

Today’s gorgeous set is the third Ken Harrison design and our last production of the season, THE UNFRIEND 🫶

This impressive set begins as the deck of a cruise ship before transforming into the cosy living room of Lindels. ☀️

The versatility of this set goes far beyond its cruise ship-to-home transformation. The space was cleverly designed across multiple levels, featuring a bathroom, staircase, kitchen, and even a front door complete with a street view 😍

From the moment the scene changes, we're fully immersed in the family's home as they panic over a potentially murderous house guest 👀

TAKING STEPS 🎭

TAKING STEPS, first staged in 1979, is considered Alan Ayckbourn’s only classic farce. Set over one chaotic night and morning in a crumbling house and former brothel, the play is famous for its ingenious staging: all three floors of the building are represented on a single level, with actors miming the stairs, creating constant comic confusion.

This summer we want to look back at the incredible season we’ve had by appreciating the amazing people that designed our productions 🎭

Today we're taking a look at the wonderful set for THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (abridged), designed by the one and only Ken Harrison 🫶

This incredible set was the perfect backdrop for the chaos as our three brave actors tackled all 37 of Shakespeare's plays in just 97 minutes! 😱

Every detail was thoughtfully designed—even the walls were covered with posters representing every single Shakespeare play, making it impossible to leave any of them out.

This summer we want to look back at the incredible season we’ve had by appreciating the amazing people that designed our productions 🎭

Today we're taking a look at the gorgeous set for SWITZERLAND, designed by the incredibly talented Amy Yardley 🫶

Set in the bunker of the reclusive writer Patricia Highsmith towards the end of her life, SWITZERLAND was packed with incredible detail. Highsmith was famously a collector of weapons, so alongside the beautiful desk, typewriter and furniture, the walls were lined with knives, daggers and pistols 👀

A set as unsettling as the thriller itself.

Set Shout-Out 🎭

This summer we want to look back at the incredible season we’ve had by appreciating the amazing people that designed our productions! 😍

This gorgeous set was designed by Ken Harrison for SEE HOW THEY RUN! 🏃🏃‍♀️🏃

The play is set entirely in a vicarage in the quaint town of Merton-cum-Middelwick during WWII. This cosy living room with its various doors (french, front and closet) was the perfect backdrop for the chaos😅 Misunderstandings, miscommunications and multiple vicars!

Starting off with the talented Fraser Lappin and THE EFFECT 💊
This had so many levels! Set in a medical testing facility, it had an observation room, screens that projected brain scans and heart rate monitors, creepy hospital tiles, satisfying rounded corners, a giant curtain, a lot of LEDs and the cosiest tracksuits we are still thinking about! 😍
