This evening, Michael Spyres makes his Bratislava Music Festival debut with the first concert program of his career devoted entirely to Baroque repertoire, exploring the dazzling virtuosity and expressive range of the Baroque tenor.

Michael Spyres reunites with Il Pomo d’Oro at the Slovak Philharmonic Concert Hall, where he previously appeared in December 2023 alongside Lawrence Brownlee in "Game of Tenors."

The program revisits music from Michael Spyres’s acclaimed 2023 album "Contra-Tenor," recorded with Il Pomo d’Oro and Francesco Corti. Challenging the perception of the Baroque era as primarily the age of the castrato, the album explores the remarkable prominence and versatility of the tenor voice in opera during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Michael Spyres performs arias by Handel, Vivaldi, Galuppi, Latilla, Rameau, Porpora, Sarro and Hasse, including music from "Tamerlano," "Theodora," "Artabano, re de’ Parti," "Alessandro nell’Indie," "Siroe, re di Persia," "Naïs," "Germanico in Germania," "Achille in Sciro" and "Arminio." Il Pomo d’Oro also performs instrumental works by Vivaldi, Galuppi and Sammartini.

Toi, toi, toi to Beth Taylor as she makes her role debut as Dido in Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” at London’s historic Temple Church this evening. The performance is part of Temple Music’s autumn season.

Beth Taylor has already sung the Sorceress on Il Pomo d’Oro’s 2024 European tour and on the ensemble’s recording, released by Warner Classics/Erato in 2025. She now sings the queen whose downfall the Sorceress sets in motion.

The concert marks Beth Taylor’s return to Temple Music following “Where Great Mezzos Meet,” her May 2026 recital with Dame Sarah Connolly and pianist Julius Drake at Middle Temple Hall.

Christian Curnyn conducts the Early Opera Company. The program also includes Purcell’s “Welcome to All the Pleasures.”

Toi, toi, toi to Beth Taylor, who tonight joins the Chorus and Orchestra of the Polish National Opera in Warsaw as the alto soloist in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, the “Resurrection.” The concert opens the company’s 2026/27 concert season and marks the start of Yoel Gamzou’s tenure as Music Director.

One of today’s most sought-after Mahler interpreters, Beth Taylor has sung the “Resurrection” Symphony with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner and the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel. Most recently, she performed it with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle.

Tonight Michael Spyres returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper as Jupiter in Handel’s Semele. He first sang the role at the 2023 Munich Opera Festival premiere of Claus Guth’s production. Leonardo García Alarcón conducts this revival. Further performances follow on September 28 and October 2, 4, and 7.

Handel has a prominent place in Michael Spyres’s wide-ranging repertoire. The American tenor has sung Tempo in Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, Septimius in Theodora, the title role in Jephtha, and Jupiter in Semele. He has also sung the tenor parts in Messiah and Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day. His repertoire spans Mozart, Italian opera, French grand opera, Wagner, and 20th-century works.

The American baritenor made his Bayerische Staatsoper debut as Hoffmann in Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann in 2017 and returned to the role in Munich during the 2019/20 season. He is scheduled to return to the house in June 2027 as Mozart’s Idomeneo.

Ricarda Merbeth returns to the Opéra national du Capitole this evening to make her role debut as the Foreign Princess in Dvořák’s "Rusalka", which inaugurates the company’s 2026/27 season. She previously appeared in Toulouse as Elektra in 2021 and as the Dyer’s Wife in "Die Frau ohne Schatten" in 2024.

Acclaimed as one of the leading Wagner and Strauss interpreters of her generation, Ricarda Merbeth adds the Foreign Princess to a repertoire encompassing some of the most demanding dramatic soprano roles, including Brünnhilde, Isolde, Senta, Elektra, the Dyer’s Wife, and Turandot.

Giacomo Sagripanti conducts the revival of Stefano Poda’s production, first presented at the Opéra national du Capitole in 2022.

Further performances take place on September 25, 27, and 30, and October 4.

Toi, toi, toi to Juan Sancho, who opens his 2026/27 season as Pane in Francesco Cavalli’s "La Calisto", which inaugurates the Theater an der Wien’s new season.

Cavalli’s music has accompanied Juan Sancho since the early years of his career. In 2008, he sang Pallante in the first modern revival of "La virtù de’ strali d’Amore" at Venice’s Teatro Malibran, conducted by Fabio Biondi with Europa Galante. The production was later released on DVD by Naxos.

The new production of "La Calisto" is staged by Theater an der Wien artistic director Stefan Herheim and conducted by Christina Pluhar, one of today’s leading interpreters of 17th-century music, leading L’Arpeggiata.
A coproduction with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, "La Calisto" has further performances on September 19, 21, 24, 26, and 28.

A major milestone for Beth Taylor as she opens her 2026/27 season making her long-awaited debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden as Bradamante in Handel’s Alcina, in Richard Jones’ Olivier Award-winning production conducted by David Bates.

Handel and Baroque opera play a significant role in the Scottish mezzo-soprano’s repertoire, which includes Cornelia in Giulio Cesare, Elmira in Floridante and Dardano in Amadigi di Gaula, as well as Handel’s Messiah. Bradamante showcases the rich lower register, vocal agility, and dramatic intensity that have established Beth Taylor as one of today’s most distinctive mezzo-sopranos.

Performances are this evening and on September 18, 20, 23, 25, and October 3.
