💥 EX AEQUO WINNER POETRY PERFORMANCE FILM AWARD
Filmtitle: Imaginings
Director: Anja Hiddinga (Netherlands)
Poets: Kitchen's Light (Bart Koolen, Boaz Blume, Brendan Lodder, Marie van Driessche, Sam Onclin, Tobias de Ronde) 👏
Imaginings shows a group of six performers (Kitchen’s Light), addressing viewers directly and sharing, individually and collectively, their struggles and dreams in poetic self-portraits. Against a background of suppression of deaf people and signed languages, these performances in sign language of a new Deaf generation emanate confidence and empowerment. At the same time, they evoke the vulnerabilities that go with being different, confronting viewers implicitly in their openness. The ‘signed word’ pieces unfold along the lines of three themes: I am, Walls, and Dreams. Throughout the film the camera keeps eye-contact with the performers in medium close images and the sound design subtly captures their physical presence. Together these aspects make Imaginings a unique experimental project, co-created by a range of talents in a spirit of equality.
Together with the film an interactive web-application (www.signlab.live) has been designed offering an international platform for literary culture in sign language.
Anja Hiddinga (1953) has made various documentaries and experimental films around sign language and deafness. Among these are the award winning poetry films in sign language: Growth, (IFFR 2003) Polder, Reflection, Strand and Fire (IFFR 2005) and the documentary I Sign, I Live (Picture for Picture Festival, 2012). She is also active as researcher at the University of Amsterdam.
