ImPulsTanz - Vienna International Dance Festival

ImPulsTanz - Vienna International Dance Festival ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival
8 JULY – 8 AUGUST 2027 A new dance culture unfolds itself and spreads out.
(1)

Thousands of professional dancers, choreographers and teachers from all over the world, come together, work together, for five weeks, in one city - ImPulsTanz. In Austria‘s leading cultural city Vienna the cultural manager Karl Regenburger and the choreographer Ismael Ivo launch the "Internationale Tanzwochen Wien" in 1984, in order to give contemporary dance a voice in Austria. With six teachers

- amongst them the well-known Joe Alegado, Germaine Acogny and Walter Raines - and twenty workshops, the two organisers get the festival started. Four years later, in 1988, a performance programme is added to the increasingly successful workshop festival: the "ImPulsTanz - Vienna International Dance Festival" is introduced for the first time, featuring works by Marie Chouinard, Ko Murobushi and Mark Tompkins. All names that are still closely connected with ImPulsTanz, which meanwhile has grown to Europe's biggest contemporary festival. Aiming the furtherance of contemporary dance in Austria, ImPulsTanz fathers the Research programme in 1990, offering work and research projects for professional dancers, with Susanne Linke, Mary Overlie, Karine Saporta and Nina Martin as project mentors in the first year. Another step to the hotspot of the contemporary dance scene is made by establishing [8:tension] Young Choreographers' Series within the festival programme. The series invites emerging artists to show their works at ImPulsTanz, where they also get the opportunity to connect with the international community of dance and performance artists

Today, ImPulsTanz stands for performances, workshops, research projects as well as for the soçial programme, which became with the festival lounge and parties a fixed hightlight in Vienna’s summer nightlife. With an annual programme of about 50 productions, staged in the city’s most important venues, and more than 200 Workshops, where dance is celebrated in all its forms, ImPulsTanz has delevoped into one of the most important festivals for contemporary dance and performance worldwide. In 2012, the festival has been awarded with the "Bank Austria Kunstpreis", Austria's most prestigious art prize. The ImPulsTanz - Vienna International Dance Festival takes place every year from mid-July to mid-August in Vienna. 10 years of free dancing outdoors, coming together, moving together — and dancing our hearts and souls out. How did 10 years pass so quickly? And somehow, this beautiful routine of meeting every summer, taking over public spaces and simply dancing together has already become such a wholesome part of our lives ✨

What started in 2017 as a new series of free outdoor dance classes quickly became a true audience favourite. Since then, Public Moves has brought countless dance styles, teaching artists, dancers and curious bodies together across Vienna — and beyond. From Vienna and since 2024 also to Klagenfurt, Linz and Salzburg – Public Moves kept growing, moving and bringing people together.

Here’s to 10 years of Public Moves — and to many, many more summers of dancing together 💛

Happy birthday, Public Moves! 🎂✨

Here’s an ultra sneak peek into Gabrielle Levie’s () general rehearsal for „Winter Quarters“, which celebrated its Austrian premiere this week at Projektraum. We had the chance not only to talk with Gabrielle about the inspirations behind the work, but also to step backstage and witness the preparation of the elaborate costumes that play a central role in the performance. 💖

Calling herself a “performer and props maker,” Levie cites childhood memories with disney movies and traveling circuses as influences. Through a continuous transformation of characters and costumes, she masterfully creates a sequence of playful illusions and theatrical sleights of hand 🎪

The set, created by Théo Pézeril (), features a transforming rolling house that functions as both stage installation and wardrobe, becoming a prop in its own right throughout the performance.

For the Vienna performances at ImPulsTanz, Noé Leleu () appears on stage, lending her own live voice to the piece for the very first time ✨

The day before the premiere, we visited Dominique Tegho and her performers Anthony Nakhlé and Hassandra during rehearsals at Schauspielhaus, where we spoke about the ideas behind her work and the political motivation shaping the intimacy of collision.

Set against a Europe where anti-Arab stereotypes are once again being weaponised, the intimacy of collisions confronts racist imagery through movement. Drawing on folk traditions while challenging Orientalist fantasies, the work unfolds with both fury and euphoria.

Celebrate the last weekend of ImPulsTanz Festival 2026 with us! 🪩✨ For Friday, 7 August, we thought about something very special: we will have our Final Workshop Showing not as usual at Workshop Centre Arsenal, but take it to the big stage and have «the biggest expressions ever’26» at the Arkadenhof of Vienna’s City Hall! 💖
After the Showing it’s time to party with no one else than French DJ and composer Awir Leon who provided the soundtrack to Amala Dianor’s legendary MQ Opening of 2025. Compagnie Amala Dianor / Kaplan will perform this year as well – in solos, group moments and battles. Also part of the line-up: sets by DJ Sora and Stéphane Peeps 🪩

Showing: Free admission
Party: Pre-sale: €18 / €10 with workshop pass
