Multilingual Reading & Performance am Karlsplatz in cooperation with during inbetween 14.09.2024

5 Artists wrote their own texts concerning deeptime, read interwoven in 5 different languages: Farsi, Spanish, Nepali, Serbian and English. Wich was a strong task, in very little time 🙏 The reading took place inside and outside of the exhibition space at the same time. & read outside, in the storm. In order to comment on topics such as „who is inside and who is outside“.
The reading led into the second part of the performance wich was acted out by the two amazing dancers: Amina & Malik

Having heard 5 languages in such a way, interwoven, was truly special.

BENGISU BAYRAK
“Have I told you before?” (2024)
180 x 60 cm, mixed media on untreated cotton canvas
This work explores the intersection of memory, nature, and time through fabric and paper pieces that combine botanical illustrations, dried flowers, and fragmented autobiographical texts. The botanical elements and preserved flowers symbolize the fragile yet enduring connections between women, nature, and history. The fragmented diary-like texts evoke the fleeting nature of memory, creating a dialogue between personal history and the natural world.
Through this fusion of imagery, text, and natural elements, I seek to create a space where viewers can reflect on their own relationships with time, nature, and memory, and how these connections persist across the vastness of Deep Time. Bengisu Bayrak was awarded several awards, including “Akbank Contemporary Artists Achievement Award” and “Moleskine 2.0 Design Competition” . Her works are in private collections in Turkey, United States, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Italy, and Germany, as well as in the collection of Odunpazarı Modern Museum. In addition to making contemporary art, she teaches on art and design in Beykoz University, and İstanbul Bilgi University; and she co- authored a book titled “Çağdaş Sanatta Anlam Sorunu Üzerine Bir Deneme” (An Essay on Significance in Contemporary Art).

MANUELA PICALLO GIL
„somos semillas” (2024)
180 x 60 cm, mixed media on untreated cotton canvas

Bedia Ekiz with inBEtween_deeptime 2024: „The Game 1994“ (2014–2019) Installation
Space and its boundaries which separate a person from the environment to some extent and provide an area for movements and actions are defined as perceived space by observers. In this sense, the world is a place that consists of various geographies, and we all occupy a space throughout our existence. Alongside hunting and gathering, humans occupied caves as places. Each parcel on any geographical space we reserve and their ownership become prevalent with agriculture. Thereafter villages, towns and cities were formed. And within these formations, places began to come into existence. Cities, towns and villages are home to various places depending on their activities and size. Today the architecture of a metropolis and that of a small village provides different environmental and cultural activities.
The adversities between a construction and a story stem from the way in which we continue to be a part of the mentality of the unconditional era.

Bedia Ekiz was born in 1987 in Osmaniye, Turkey. She graduated from Art Teaching at the Faculty of Education, Marmara University, and completed her master’s degree in Plastic Arts at the Faculty of Social Sciences Yeditepe University. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, Bedia Ekiz lives and works in Kadıköy, Istanbul.

at inBEtween_deeptime 2024 : “The Sense of Place: Territorial Exchange’ (2024)

“My work delves into the intricate interactions and interrelationships between people, plants and landscape, exploring how these connections can be woven into the fabric of storytelling. Themes of territory and habitat are central to my practice, guiding my investigations into ethnobotany and the deep-seated ties between plants, landscape, and culture. Through my work, I seek to illuminate the profound sense of place that emerges from these exchanges, revealing the stories that bind us to the natural world.” Ceyiz Makal Fairclough is both an academic and a lens-based artist. She has lived and worked in Turkey, UK, Yemen and Poland. She is currently a lecturer in photography and visual studies at Beykoz University in Istanbul. Alongside her academic career she is a practising photographer with a particular interest in issues related to ecology, migration and identity.
