How heavy is lightness?

Paper, glass, porcelain, metal, wood, textiles, light – and sometimes even air: FOKUS: THE ESSENCE OF LIGHTNESS explores what lightness can mean in contemporary design.

Materials are folded, stretched, cast, twisted, illuminated or deliberately left to their own devices. Some objects actually float, others appear fragile or change with light and movement. Sometimes lightness comes from reduction and using as little material as possible; sometimes from complex constructions whose effort is barely visible in the finished object.

Furniture and lighting meet sculptural objects and material experiments – between technical precision and emotional freedom, the intuitive and the poetic.

36 positions. More than ten countries. One question: What does lightness mean in design today?

For the fifth edition of FOKUS, Swiss guest curator Connie Hüsser brings together young and established designers with very different backgrounds, practices and approaches.

Launched by the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK in 2022, FOKUS offers a platform for experimental, conceptual and artistic approaches to object design. Each year, an international guest curator selects works from local and international submissions around a new theme.

For THE ESSENCE OF LIGHTNESS, 36 international positions come together at the Festival Headquarters – showing just how differently one single idea can be interpreted. Lightness becomes a question of material and construction, but also of movement, openness, intuition and attitude.

MOVING MATERIALS | EPISODE 6: Simon Hundsbichler and Jonas Nath – SCREENTIME

Six motion designers once again take over the video wall of the RADO Boutique on Kärntner Straße. LINK IN BIO

What if fleeting digital images left permanent traces of the time they once occupied? This project explores the temporality of screen-based media through two complementary phenomena: the ghost image and the screensaver. While the ghost image preserves past images as irreversible material imprints within ageing pixels, the screensaver protects the display through subtle, continuous movement. Inspired by the cinemagraph, its looping standby mode suspends the image between stillness and motion, dissolving any sense of beginning or end. Together, they reveal a tension between an echo of the past and an endless, hypnotic present — asking how digital media reshape our perception of time.

MOVING MATERIALS

In collaboration with the Swiss watch manufacturer Rado, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK presents new works by six motion designers throughout the year.

From March to August, a new animation is shown each month on the video wall of the Rado Boutique in Vienna. During VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2026, all works will be presented together — and the winner of the RADO MOVING MATERIALS prize will be announced.

Matriarchive transforms the library at the Palais Stella into an installation-based setting for feeling, reading, and listening.

An invitation to dream together of a different future: To mark its first public presentation, the Matriarchive collective, comprised of over forty women from the fields of architecture, art, photography, design, and literature, has created several spaces: a tactile space where materials carry women’s inherited knowledge, a reading space displaying the collective’s writings and archives, and a listening space filled with recordings and spoken voices. The installation recounts the founding story of Matriarchive, from a grandmother’s house to a villa for the village.

Rado showcases how time, architecture, and materials come together – with Moving Materials and Le Corbusier.

The Rado Boutique on Kärntner Straße will once again serve as a showcase for visionary watch design during the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. This year’s focus is on the “True Round × Les Couleurs® Le Corbusier®” Special Edition. Inspired by Le Corbusier’s visionary design language and his iconic “Polychromie Architecturale” color system, the collection combines timeless architecture with innovative watchmaking. The presentation is complemented by additional design pieces as well as the six videos from the RADO MOVING MATERIALS competition, which can also be viewed at the Festival Headquarters.

A curated culinary experience and exceptional design in the garden of the MAK Geymüllerschlössel, hosted by Popchop.

ZEIT FÜR KOST, hosted by Popchop, presents the dining table as a stage for contemporary food culture, artistic encounters and slowing down within the unique setting of the historic architectural gem Geymüllerschlössel in Pötzleinsdorf. From June to October, a series of events unfolds, each with its own distinctive character and united by a shared dramaturgy of space, food culture and applied art. On 4.10., the table will be curated by Kiosk OK by Studio OK, with Estudio Schumi responsible for the culinary concept. The event will take place only in good weather.

Make room for life: “FRAKTA” reimagined! Starting from questions of movement, storage and structure, a spatial installation emerges that brings together architecture, furniture design and material research, demonstrating how organisation can be reimagined today.

The iconic blue IKEA bag is transformed into a new organisational system for everyday life—personal, flexible and practical. Alongside ten other projects nominated through the Open Call, the winning entry by Lisa Stolz and Juan Vértiz can be experienced in the IKEA exhibition at the festival headquarters.

MOVING MATERIALS | EPISODE 5: Diana Bobb – PARENTS OF TIME

Six motion designers once again take over the video wall of the RADO Boutique on Kärntner Straße. LINK IN BIO

What if time were not a universal constant, but something shaped by movement, repetition and perception? In this animation, cosmic and biological rhythms converge — from stars, shifting shadows and phases of the moon to heartbeats, breathing and metabolism. Bringing together ancient ways of measuring time with insights from modern physics, the work explores how different bodies and living beings experience duration at their own pace. It asks whether time is an inherent property of the universe, or whether it only becomes tangible through recurring movement and our perception of it.

THEMIS DANUBE is an interactive installation that gives the Danube ecosystem a voice and brings it to life.

More than one hundred native animal, plant, fungal, and microbial species form fleeting faces that continuously emerge, transform, and dissolve. By dipping their hands into a basin of water, visitors can alter the audiovisual composition and trigger spoken fragments. The installation encourages us to experience the Danube not just as a resource or landscape, but as a living community of which we are a part.

OUT OF LINE ist eine partizipative Installation von Afterhour Furniture, die den Umgang mit Designklassikern zwischen Gebrauchsobjekt und Sammler*innenstück hinterfragt. Im Showroom des Concept Stores wird ein Sofa dabei zur gemeinschaftlichen Zeichenfläche: Erwachsene malen mit verbundenen Augen und ohne Anspruch auf Perfektion, Kinder ohne Vorgaben. So wird das Möbelstück zum Zeugnis einer kollektiven Nutzung und lädt dazu ein, die Grenzen zwischen Nutzung und Bewahrung neu zu betrachten.
