On 18 December, two discursive screenings will take place at Civa / Belvedere Blickle Cinema .
The programme begins at 6 pm with the short film Ein Quantensprung in der Zeitmessung by the Österreichischer Wissenschaftsfonds FWF .
The clip introduces a breakthrough achieved at the Atominstitut of the Vienna University of Technology: In 2023, Thorsten Schumm and his team succeeded in exciting an atomic nucleus with laser light for the first time – a milestone in basic research and time measurement. In dialogue with this, artist Miriam Hamann  presents a selection of her artworks that also explore notions of time and challenge scientific narratives. Together with Civa director Eva Fischer (), the two will discuss constructions of temporality, (post)humanist perspectives, and arts & science practices.
The talk will be given in German.
The programme continues with the screening of Brute Force at 7:15pm. The artists Felix Lenz , Ganaël Dumreicher , and Dunia Sahir , in conversation with Ivana Pilić from D–Arts , provide insights into the methods behind their essay film Brute Force (2025). The open discussion navigates through fragments of the film, where quantum theory and geology serve as lenses to expose the omissions, distortions, and ecological consequences of data extraction and image production.

It’s been a month since the Civa Festival ended, but the exhibition |indeterminate⟩⟨apparatus| is still on view until February 1, 2026✨
Discover the work of Libby Heaney Q IS FOR CLIMATE (?)
By superposing images, the work offers a way out of a destructive path and asks if quantum thinking can align technology with planetary care.
Special thanks go to for providing the tree trunks used in Libby Heaney’s installation. This year Österreichische Bundesforste celebrate their 100 year anniversary to mark this milestone they are launching a series of activities, insights and campaigns including the project RealiTree, an application using augmented reality and artificial intelligence.

We are very pleased to present our programme in cooperation with the artists collective iii - Instrument Inventors Initiative
Throughout the festival and the exhibition discover the work of various iii artists.
Evelina Domnitch & Dmitry Gelfand present their work Time Synthesizer at Blickle Kino during the screening loop programme on our opening day, October 2nd.
On October 4th the duo performs Force Field, a live performance that taps into the 3-dimensionality of sound, the elusive physicality of water, as well as the rotational dynamics of celestial and subatomic bodies.
During the exhibition |indeterminate⟩⟨apparatus| take a look at the object Quantum Mirror made by artist, curator and inventor Mike Rijnierse .
With the object Quantum Mirror, Mike Rijnierse evokes the principle of superposition, in which a system is described as a realm of possible states until it is measured.
Co-founders of instrument inventors initiative (iii), Matteo Marangoni & Dieter Vandoren present Komorebi a swarm of artificial creatures that make music in response to the sun, the clouds and the shadows of trees moving in the wind.
The installation is open to visitors in the Skulpturgarten from 12pm-7pm on October 4th.
Encounter the work of Sophia Bulgakova and Mark IJzerman All Eyes On, an embodied audiovisual performance. The performance is an experiment in the collective consciousness, in which the audience is invited to experience themselves as an interconnected whole. The performance takes place on October 4th at Blickle Kino from 9:30pm-10pm.
On October 4th, take part in the discussion with Evelina Domnitch & Dmitry Gelfand, Mike Rijnierse Natalie Paneng and Patrick Emonts at Sensing The Unseen: Art, Science & The Perception of Invisible Realms. They will be joined by artist educator, program developer and co-curator of |indeterminate⟩⟨apparatus| Leon Lapa Pereira .

On October 2nd and October 3rd, along with discussions and lectures, film screenings will be taking place that are accompanied by dialogues and live performances.
On the opening day of the festival, October 2nd, both curators Ana Prendes and Eva Fischer will be screening a short film loop over two hours that combines international perspectives and will be continuously repeated until midnight. The works range from speculative fiction, experimental documentary, non-narrative abstraction, and video essay, exploring socio-technical concepts of quantum phenomenon and quantum technology.

On Friday the 3rd, Chino Moya premieres his latest film Four Fluctuations (2023–2025), followed by a conversation between the artist and curator Ana Prendes .
The conversation will explore the convergence of science fiction and critical theory, the role of generative AI in filmmaking and visual culture, and our place in a future shared with machinic and nonhuman cognitive forms.

Civa’s discursive programme extends across the entire festival days. Participants are invited to engage in collaborative discussions and reflections on the festival’s theme, |indeterminate⟩⟨apparatus|. In discussions, dialogues, and workshops, Civa is carving out space for an in-depth exploration of the quantum realm and bringing together artistic and scientific positions to help understand indeterminacy as an aesthetic, political, and speculative space.

As Civa’s media partner, The Black Cube  enters the festival as both witness and amplifier, turning live conversations into legacy-shaping dialogues. Within a dedicated media space, the editorial team will host and record discussions with artists, curators, and scientists — tracing threads between art, society, and the imaginative architectures of quantum thinking. Focused on method, process, and the technologies that shape us, The Black Cube will weave these conversations into a living editorial project. The journey will culminate in a special co-edited collection of Dialogues at the Intersection of Quantum & Cinema. You are warmly invited to join the conversation.
The Black Cube is a new editorial platform that explores how moving images are conceived, produced, and experienced — through the lens of technology. It brings together extraordinary artists and industry voices to expand the conversation around the rapidly evolving audiovisual landscape.
