Prehistoric relics and contemporary technologies unearth a world where human concepts of time are
dissolved.
In Mona Schulzek’s exhibition ‚Trilobit’ at [tart vienna] the space is divided into two zones: the first one houses an active seismograph,
the results of its measurements, and three dioramas from the series Atmosphere ≠ Totality; the second
contains a mystical, capsule-like object guarded by two trilobite fossils. The metal construction of the
seismograph holds a scroll of carbon black paper, on which the vibrations measured in the space are
etched. While the fossils are witnesses of a time long past, the real-time measurements of the
seismograph render the current dynamics visible.
Trilobites were arthropods with exoskeletons that disappeared from the ocean floor during the great
Permian-Triassic mass extinction 252 million years ago. Their enigmatic anatomy, which has often served
as inspiration for extraterrestrial life in pop culture, makes their past existence seem just as alien as the
distant future. In his philosophy of speculative materialism, Quentin Meillassoux coined the term arche-
fossil for this phenomenon: The mere existence of fossilized creatures points to a time when there were
no humans who could have perceived and thereby shaped the world. Such an ancestral reality implies
the existence of a pre-human world that generates meaning independently of anthropocentric
observations, outside the realm of human perception.

“There is an intoxicating quality to Moallim’s sometimes calm, sometimes obsessive repetition of lines and shapes, which appears to be driven by a force that is less about virtuosity than about insisting on presence. Despite their large formats and impetuous gestures, her works seem far removed from pathos or grandiosity. Instead, the artist has developed a visual vocabulary of mark-making that connects expression with sometimes clumsy and awkward gestures. The thin BIC pen lines on linoleum in Untitled, for instance, seem like faint echoes of the powerful black formations in permanent marker, while in Att kasta sig, there is a rather lackadaisical quality to the way that the artist fills BIC pen outlines with oil crayon. Yet, it is precisely by embracing this element of chance that Moallim is able to creates works that offer us a glimpse of freedom.” by Mona Heinlein

Thinking Is a Form Of Feeling And Feeling Is A Form Of Thinking Fragments of memory appear out of thin air and disappear without a trace. Visual artist and performer Fatima Moallim (b. 1992, living and working in Stockholm and Paris) continually experiences nostalgia for the ‘90s. Although this longing doesn’t necessarily correlate with the transition into the internet era nor with pivotal moments of pop culture and grunge aesthetics, it embodies a sentiment that may not yet be tangible; one that must be triggered by observations, the moving hand, or drawn forms.
