SHAHNAMEH
The Epic of Persian kings: European Launch with Dr. Ahmad Sadri
We are delighted to announce the first European launch of the new English translation of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, presented by the translator himself, Dr. Ahmad Sadri.
A foundational text of Persian literature, Shahnameh—“The Book of Kings”—preserves the mytho-historical memory of Iran in over 50,000 couplets. Composed around 1010 CE by Ferdowsi, this monumental epic weaves together tales of legendary kings, heroes like Rostam, and moral trials that shaped the cultural and political identity of ancient Iran.
In his introduction, Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones positions Shahnameh as both a national epic and a global literary masterpiece—on par with The Iliad, The Odyssey, Beowulf, and The Mahabharata. The work is not only a chronicle of Iran’s past but also a profound expression of Persian literary and linguistic resilience.
Dr. Ahmad Sadri, sociologist, author, and Iranologist, brings Shahnameh to life in a compelling modern English translation that is both accessible and faithful to Ferdowsi’s poetic spirit. In this special event, Dr. Sadri will present insights into the translation process, the historical and literary significance of Shahnameh, and its enduring relevance in the field of Iranian Studies.
We warmly welcome scholars, students, and all interested in Persian literature and history to join us for this unique opportunity to engage with one of Iran’s greatest literary legacies—through the voice of its newest translator.
