GALERIE KRINZINGER at ASTORIA ART SHOW

The Astoria Artshow will open for the first time in Vienna from September 10 to 13, 2026. This new format is a blend of exhibition and art fair and will take place in the historic Astoria Garage.

The Artshow is organized by the VAU - Vienna Art United association and features 70 galleries. The program is divided into four sections across 8,000 square meters: The „Main Positions“ section features 32 galleries, each presenting an artistic position with a maximum of 5 works. „New Positions“ showcases younger artists from Austria born in 1986 or later. This section is curated by Casandra Hermann. The third section is reserved for editions and publications, and the fourth section provides a forum for institutions.

IN PROTEST AND IN CARE takes place in O—Overgaden’s ground floor galleries as well as, among other locations, Arnestedet at Enghaveparken. The group exhibition features works by several Danish and international artists who engage with bodily complexity, temporary and permanent impairment, and the physical as well as linguistic barriers that disable.

By challenging existing ideas of vulnerability and care, and proposing new perspectives on what constitutes artistic productivity and value, the works raise questions such as: What alternative identities and communities emerge through variations from the normative body and mind? How can one bend the body to meet expectations and demands—or, conversely, bend time and the external world to meet a body with functional variations? What potentials and possible forms of protest lie in withdrawal? Where is the line between the treatment-ready patient and the impatient subject who rebels against diagnostic methods and the objectification embedded in medical language?

Several of the works present material investigations of bodily and mental collapse—how they can be both conditions and resources in artistic practice. At the same time, they turn a critical gaze toward the institution itself and the expectations we place on art and the artist.

BARRICADE DRESDEN fits in particularly well with the Kunstverein’s annual theme, ‚The Body...‘. Angela de la Cruz does not treat the body merely as a motif, but as a lived reality that is directly inscribed in material, form and space. Her works revolve around fragility, resistance and transformation, and make physical experience visibly tangible in a powerful way.

This artistic practice is shaped by the artist’s own life story: following a severe stroke, Angela de la Cruz lives with significant physical limitations. This experience is not recounted illustratively in her works, but is made structurally tangible. Against the backdrop of current debates on visibility and participation, the exhibition offers a multi-layered perspective on the body as a site of vulnerability, change and perseverance. The result is an exploration of the conditions of human existence that is as personal as it is universal.

ROSMARIE LUKASSER
Annäherungen an „…bin im Netz i5.0“

Still on view until this week at Galerie Krinzinger Showroom (Seilerstätte 16, 1010 Vienna).

An „Echoraum“ opens the exhibition „Approaches to ...bin im Netz i5.0“, Rosmarie Lukasser’s third solo exhibition at Galerie Krinzinger.

Here, „echo“ is not understood as an acoustic phenomenon, but rather as a resonant space for the representation of an artificial neural network. A large-scale map of the global energy network illustrates the physical interconnectedness of the world. Rosmarie Lukasser uses the drawing for field research. She observes people in public spaces and adds notes on network structures to these observations.

For many years, the artist has been observing the gestures and postures of digitally connected people.
Her sculptures depict states of simultaneous presence and absence: bodies that remain in one place while attention, thoughts and relationships extend into other spaces. The devices themselves remain invisible, their existence has long since become inscribed in the bodies.

The works in the Hysteria series stem from the artist’s observation of her own internal flows. They are works made with the artist’s menstrual blood, collected in different cycles, starting in 2020.

The word „hysteria“ carries in its etymology (hystera, the uterus) centuries of silencing and control over the female body. Historically, medicine treated the uterus as a wandering organ, an agent of imbalance that justified the diagnosis of „female madness.“ By using menstrual blood as pigment and embroidery as scar and contour, this work subverts the logic of pathology. Blood, so often hidden and read as „dirt“ or „taboo,“ is presented here as the fluidity of a vital and political cycle.

Here, the internal flow is not a symptom of disease or lack of control, but evidence of presence and of a life that overflows. Each stitch embroidered in these works is an attempt to give contour, but also give way and expression, to what is immense: our inner waters, our emotions, our unconscious.

The work invites the gaze to confront what has been considered „obscene“ or „unstable,“ revealing that the woman’s body, in its various aspects, is not a problem to be solved, but a geography to be respected, a vast, deep, and pulsating ocean of life.

MARTIN SOMMER

Martin Sommer explores in his works how materials can lose their function without losing their origin. Through chemical, technical, and physical transformations, familiar objects are transferred into new constellations where their histories remain present while their functions shift.

L.C. shows two containers filled with a liquid based on lithium carbonate. Through a multi-stage process the lithium was chemically isolated from the batteries and transformed into a medically usable lithium carbonate solution.

The series B.S.S.C. consists of different storage units, made from aluminium and plexiglass panels of several dismantled bus shelters, which are coated with street dust and sugar Its basis is a calculation system that translates the experienced intensity of time into volume. In this way, volumes of days, weeks, and months emerge illustrating the dimensions of individually perceived time.

The series F.S.L.K. consists of large black textiles that are mounted on the wall. The source materials are wooden school desks and lost keys collected from the Lost & Found Office. The desks are chemically processed into paper. The result is a fabric roll that deliberately remains in a state of suspension: it refers to the possibility of further use without enacting it.

The work S.D.P.S. consists of a personal weighing scale made entirely from reclaimed doors of a slaughterhouse. It recalls a conventional scale, yet it does not measure weight. The analogue display has been modified so that the pointer moves continuously counterclockwise unless a person steps into the scale, then the direction of movement reverses and the pointer begins to move clockwise.

The exhibition is still on view at Galerie Krinzinger Main Gallery until August 29, 2026.
