To art its freedom.”—the Secession hosts an international program that explores current forms of artistic expression in solo and themed exhibitions. It is a sounding board for the aesthetic and critical discourses on art, culture, and society that define our era and keenly aware of their political significance. The Secession is an important forum for young experimental art, but its mission also en

compasses prominent established positions. Essays, catalogues, symposia, and lectures supplement, document, and communicate the program of exhibitions and events.

Im Sinne ihres an der Fassade angebrachten Mottos „Der Zeit ihre Kunst. Der Kunst ihre Freiheit“ realisiert die Secession ein international ausgerichtetes Ausstellungsprogramm, das in Einzel- und Themenausstellungen relevante künstlerische Ausdrucksformen der Gegenwart präsentiert. Es ist ein Sensorium für die ästhetischen, kunst-, kultur- und gesellschaftskritischen Diskurse, die unsere Zeit prägen, und die politische Bedeutung, die ihnen zukommt. Die Secession ist ein wichtiges Forum für junge Kunst mit einer Bereitschaft zum Experiment. Ihr Konzept umfasst aber auch markante, bereits etablierte Positionen. Texte, Kataloge, Symposien und Vorträge erweitern, dokumentieren und vermitteln die Aktivitäten des Hauses.

This event is part of the Tuesday@Secession series and takes place in the Secession garden. The bar will be open from 6 pm. In the event of rain, the programme will take place indoors.

A live camera moves through the garden in search of conversational gestures: whispering, listening, waiting, and performing attention. Across the image, a parallel text unfolds: fragments gathered from conversations, rumours, statements, anxieties, and phrases that keep returning around recent transformations in the cultural landscape. The piece stages a slippage between what is seen, what is spoken, and what circulates.

The artist talk will be in English.

Antipodes: A Radical Body Geography

Institutional racism, s*xism, heteronormativity, ableism, ageism, and classism continue to exist within cultural work and beyond. By understanding the body as a flexible and mobile geography, “Antipodes: A Radical Body Geography” calls for an expanded understanding of structural asymmetry, the interconnections of economic development, the recomposition of territories, and hybrid epistemologies. Because those who have left their countries of origin to settle in Austria were able to challenge fixed notions of territory, landscape, body, and knowledge, this project can draw from their experiences to develop this new understanding of geography. The space temporarily occupied by the voices of migrant cultural practitioners in this installation highlights the significance of the work of the migrant creative community in Austria –work that is often institutionally overlooked.

Participants respond to one of the following questions:

Where is your center?
How does forgetting take place in the West?
What does the North taste like?
How does one love in the Northeast?
How does the Northwest sound?
How does one work in the East?
How does one die in the South?
How does one rest in the Southwest?
What does the Southeast smell like?
How seriously do you take geography?
How do you move between geographic spaces?

The illustrated responses are exhibited in the Secession garden and reinterpreted by a rap artist.

Last Tuesday, ’s “KIOS” transformed the garden behind the Secession into a temporary drawing installation — an open system of signs, fragments, references and relationships.

Bringing together sketches, notations, graphic fragments and reproduced image forms, the installation explored drawing as a cultural technique of orientation and as a medium for connection and circulation.

Marianna Simnett in conversation with Bettina Spörr.

Marianna Simnett shares insights into her conceptual thinking and the creative process behind her exhibition Circus at the Secession, a multimedia exhibition that brought together light, sound, and sculptural works drawing on her Yugoslav heritage. This episode was recorded on 6 March 2026, the day after the opening.

Personal references, including a work that was inspired by her Jewish-Croatian grandfather’s experience during the Holocaust, intersect with nods to folkloric bogeywomen, who may interchangeably figure as threat or ally, and the traditional Balkan skirt that stages the delicate play of revealing and concealing intimate body parts. The show’s Circus theme manifests itself in a variety of ways throughout the presentation: in the maniacal spinning of a skirt overhead, alluding to a circus tent; in a stage for a performance; in the sound of torturous laughter; or in dazzling lights illuminating a darkened space.
Simnett’s practice consistently engages with intense corporeal states – urinating, fainting, the sensation of being tickled – which she taps into in an investigation of pleasure and pain. Having grown up in Great Britain as the daughter of a Croatian mother during the Yugoslav Wars, the artist remembers a recurring fantasy of a urinating figure resembling a folkloric female character who lifts her skirt to expose her genitalia to ward off evil spirits.

This event is part of the Tuesday@Secession series and takes place in the Secession garden. The bar will be open from 6 pm. In the event of rain, the programme will take place indoors.

“KIOS” takes the form of a temporary drawing:installation for a single evening in the outdoor space behind the Secession. The project is based on an expanded understanding of drawing that characterizes Christian Schwarzwald’s artistic practice: drawing appears not as a finished image, but as an open system of signs, references, and relationships. The installation brings together diverse graphic sources – sketches, notations, graphic fragments, and reproduced image forms – into a spatial ensemble. Rather than being unified into a single representation, the individual elements remain legible as signs in their own right. Their meaning emerges through their arrangement and through the relationships they establish with one another. The title “KIOS” refers to a site of distribution and circulation of information. In a similar way, the drawing:installation functions as a medium of connection. Different visual languages, references, and modes of recording enter a dialogue, generating an open structure that resists a singular interpretation.

“KIOS” explores drawing as a fundamental cultural technique of orientation. Public space becomes the carrier of a spatial system of signs, in which individual interventions condense into a temporary order.

Two Tuesday evenings, two immersive encounters in the Secession garden.

Over the past two weeks, the Tuesday@Secession series brought together performance, storytelling, sound, and site-specific interventions.

On 28 July, Cicadas Collective & Yein Lee presented Dispaused Script—a live storytelling performance where memories, mythology, and special effects intertwined. Through the figure of the mermaid, the work reflected on care, projection, and the emotional landscapes surrounding s*x work, with smoke, fog, light, and snow becoming performers in their own right.

On 4 August, Nika Kupyrova continued Simulacra with a performance and live concert by Ai fen. Blending dream diaries, digital mythology, live music, and performative interventions, the evening explored consciousness, digital realities, and the blurred boundaries between waking life and dreams.
