I started my Saturday in Tokyo’s book district, and after wandering through the bookstores, I finally found a book I had been looking for: Sanzo Wada’s iconic Dictionary of Color Combinations. 🎨

Wada was a Japanese painter, costume and kimono designer, and color researcher who organized hundreds of color combinations in the 1930s. Rather than simply cataloguing colors, he explored how colors change and interact depending on what is placed next to them. His work has become an important reference for design, textiles, art, and the study of color.

And perhaps the best part is that I found it right here in Tokyo, in the very book district where I had hoped to find it. 📚

Another piece of Japan to take home with me — this time not just a souvenir, but a source of professional inspiration.

Today’s workbench. 🖌️

Although I work with the same Japanese brushes, tools and materials at home, experiencing them here — in this environment, surrounded by Japanese conservation specialists — feels completely different.

It’s not only about the materials themselves, but about the knowledge, traditions and atmosphere behind them. A truly special experience.

Not a tourist this time. 🇯🇵
This time, I’m in Tokyo not as a tourist, but as a conservator — here to learn, work and deepen my knowledge of Japanese paper conservation.

It is an incredible honour to be part of the International Course on Conservation of Japanese Paper – JPC 2026, organised by ICCROM and TOBUNKEN. Out of nearly 200 applicants, only 10 participants were selected to take part in this three-week intensive course in Tokyo.

I feel incredibly grateful for this opportunity and for the chance to learn from leading Japanese specialists and fellow conservators from around the world.

I’m sure these three weeks will bring an incredible amount of learning, inspiration and new experiences — and I’m looking forward to bringing as much as possible back home with me.

The restoration of this medieval paper charter is now complete.

Next week, the document can also be seen in person at the new exhibition on the Battle of Mohács at the Hungarian National Archives.

Restoration of a Medieval Paper Charter

So many of you said yes, so I’ll show you how this special box is made, step by step — in September.

I’m leaving soon, so I won’t have time to prepare the tutorial before my trip. And, to be honest, I was so excited while making this box that I didn’t take a single photo of the process. 😊

I enjoyed making it so much, though, that I’m planning to make more of them in the autumn — and this time, I’ll document the process.

I first discovered this box thanks to my colleague Betti, who has already made several of them. ✨

The restoration of this medieval parchment charter is now complete. I have also prepared the document for its upcoming exhibition.

It will be on display this autumn at an exhibition in Székesfehérvár, Hungary.

Restoration of a Medieval Parchment Charter

In the restoration of this medieval parchment charter, I focused on preserving the original material and its historical information.

🔹 1. Dry mechanical cleaning
I removed loose surface dirt using gentle mechanical methods.

🔹 2. Softening and humidification
Parchment is often affected by deformation, cockling, desiccation and stiffness. I used humidification to increase the moisture content of the parchment and reduce its distortions.

A semi-permeable Sympatex membrane was used to allow the gradual transfer of water vapour and promote more even humidification, while preventing direct contact with liquid water.

The softening process was followed by flattening, pressing and slow drying to minimise stresses within the parchment.

🔹 3. Reinforcement and loss compensation
I reinforced the severely weakened and damaged parchment with several layers of Japanese paper. I compensated for the missing areas using Japanese paper matched to the colour of the original parchment and rice starch paste.

Throughout the restoration, I aimed to preserve the original material, keep intervention to a minimum, and maintain the document’s accessibility for future study.

Medieval Charters: From Parchment to Paper

This summer, we prepared a selection of medieval charters for an exhibition. In the coming posts, I would like to share the conservation and restoration of two of these documents — first a parchment charter, followed by a paper charter.

The first document is a charter issued in 1373 by Kálmán, Bishop of Győr, written on parchment.

The parchment had numerous tears and several areas of loss, requiring careful structural repair to ensure its stability while preserving its historical character.

The conservation is complete.

At the archivist’s request, I did not re-sew the leaves into book blocks after conservation. Instead, my task was to design a storage solution that would safely protect the two unbound volumes, which are stored upright in the repository.

I made a custom acid-free corrugated board box for each of the two volumes. Inside each box, I placed the leaves in a four-flap acid-free wrapper. The original surviving sewing thread fragments were housed in a separate compartment inside the box, and I also included the conservation documentation.

I housed the parchment bindings separately in custom-made acid-free folders. They were assigned new reference numbers and will now be preserved independently as historical documents in their own right.
