Kleinod #15: Der Hirsch 🦌

In rural areas, November is entirely shaped by the hunting season. The calls of the beaters, the barking of the dogs, and the sound of gunshots could be heard from afar, leaving me, too, in a somber and contemplative mood. Questions of hunting and ethics have occupied my mind for a long time; now it was time to dedicate a positive symbol to this complex subject.

The stag has always been regarded as a being between worlds. Its antlers, rising skyward like a growing tree, make it a symbol of renewal, royal dignity, and the connection between earth and spirit. With their annual shedding, they also stand for cosmic order and rebirth. In Celtic and Germanic traditions, the stag appears as a messenger from the Otherworld, a guide in times of transition, and the embodiment of strength and protection. In Christian symbolism, it becomes an image of the longing for God, of the pure heart, and of the path to the light—especially in the legend of Saint Hubert, whom a stag bearing a radiant cross called to repentance.

Whether as mythical guide, sacred creature, or emblem of inner transformation—the stag remains an archetypal sign of the search for the sacred within the earthly. Its calm gaze recalls icon painting: powerful not through force, but through a quiet authority that touches our conscience and calls us to act with kindness.

After his vision, Hubert turned away from the hunt. And although he is now considered the patron saint of hunters, his legacy stands for something else: a respectful, responsible relationship with animals and nature, mindfulness, and a deep appreciation of all living things. In this ethos of the chase, hunting does not mean dominion but stewardship—an act of balance, respect, and preservation. Whoever enters the forest in this spirit is not an owner but a guest. And those who choose the peaceful path walk softly and in silence.

Bestiary # 7: THE DIODONTIDA

The Diodontida, with its adorable appearance, embodies an intriguing dilemma: its cuteness masks its defensive nature, but it's this very defensiveness that enhances its cuteness, which in turn is leading to troubles.

This marvel of the ocean captivates observers with large, expressive eyes and a delightful, smiling mouth - although this very mouth has caught many off guard with surprisingly powerful bites, many a finger fell victim to it.

When danger looms, Diodontida morphs by absorbing water or air, causing its spines to stand erect and transforming it into a forbidding, spiked sphere, deterring predators from hunting it as prey. Attempting to consume it could prove fatal - the inflated fish could block the predator's throat, causing both to perish.

Regrettably, the Diodontida's remarkable appearance also exposes it to the peril of human capture, resulting in its demise and sale as a mere souvenir. So heartlessly deprived of its dignity, it falls victim to its own charm.

Furthermore, the Diodontida can harbor a potent poison that, if ingested, can prove lethal to the consumer. Despite its toxicity, it doesn't ensure its escape from predation. Should the consumer, be it another fish or a human, perish after consuming it, the fish's revenge is rendered moot, as it too met its demise – a cruel irony in nature's intricate web.

The Diodontida navigates a world where self-defense isn’t lighthearted or fun. Where dangers lurk, yet Diodontida remains content with its distinctive and splendid existence. While its nature harbors its shadows, this fascinating creature approaches life - with a smile.

Bestiary #6: THE ARIES
***

In the rugged terrain where winds whisper tales of hidden dangers, Aries stands solid as a rock. His heart beats as steadfast as the mountains that embrace him, while he diligently watches over his herd, guided by boundless patience and souveregnity. Amidst the tumultuous weathers, he remains resolute in his duties, a stalwart defender of his flock, himself, and the bountiful nature that nurtures them all.

In his presence, one discovers a steadfast guardian, a protector of life's delicate balance, embodying the essence of determination and unwavering devotion. The dance of life and death intertwines gracefully under his vigilant gaze, and the wild harmony of the land finds its anchor in his unwavering dedication. Aries, the symbol of resistance, etches his mark on the very fabric of the untamed wilderness, leaving a legacy of courage and resilience that echoes through the ages.

Bestiary # 5: THE MOTH

As an artist and an observer of nature’s wonders, I found myself captivated by the enigmatic allure of moths. These delicate creatures, with their intricate patterns and fragile wings, were known to navigate the night sky by orienting themselves towards the gentle glow of the moon. Yet, this instinctual behavior also posed a grave risk, drawing them towards other sources of light such as lamps, candles, and open fires—dangerous beacons that led them astray, often to their demise. Many would perish, their fragile bodies succumbing to the heat and their dreams extinguished.

So this is my gift: No longer would fire and hot lamps pose a threat to this courageous creature. The golden armor I painted acts as a shield, deflecting the searing heat and preserving the moth’s fragile beauty. In the face of disorienting lights, it remained unyielding, fearless, and resolute.

Bestiary # 4: THE KRAKEN
In ancient folklore, Seemannsgarn and Nordic Tales, the Kraken is portrayed as a monstrous creature, capable of causing destruction and pulling ships into the depths
If the Kraken ever does so, it does so for a justifiable cause—perhaps in response to whalers, seal-slayers, or those who exploit or pollute the seas.

To me, the Kraken embodies a shy, curious and highly intelligent being. He is guardian of the seas and all its inhabitants, extending its protection even to athletes like surfers and divers - as long as they demonstrate respectful behavior.
But the Kraken doesn't want respect just for itself - He wants people to respect the whole ocean and it’s wonders.

🐙🐡🦑🦀🐬🦐🪼🦈🐳🐠

By painting the creatures of my personal Bestiary in the heraldic tradition, in the form of shields, I emphasizing their role as power animals and protective guardians. The shield, within heraldry, has long been a symbol of protection and defense, traditionally associated with knights and warriors. By portraying these creatures within the framework of shields, I am visually conveying their role as guardians, imbued with strength and safeguarding qualities. The heraldic tradition adds a layer of symbolism and reinforces the notion that these creatures are not only formidable beings but also serve as protectors in a personal mythology or belief system.
