Wer steckt eigentlich hinter ON THE EDGE?

Wir sind Alex, Ana, Arne, Lili, Nefeli und Thomas & haben eines gemeinsam: Wir alle arbeiten bereits seit Jahren in der österreichischen Kunst- und Kulturszene und brennen für zeitgenössischen Zirkus.

ON THE EDGE findet im November 2026 zum 7. Mal statt und ist in den Jahren stets gewachsen. Umso mehr freuen wir uns, dass auch unser Team dieses Jahr weitergewachsen ist. 💛

Who’s behind ON THE EDGE?

We are Alex, Ana, Arne, Lili, Nefeli and Thomas & we have one thing in common: we have all been working in Austria’s arts and cultural scene for many years, and we are passionate about contemporary circus.

In November 2026, ON THE EDGE will celebrate its 7th edition. Over the years, the festival has continued to grow – and we are delighted that our team has grown as well this year. 💛

A warm welcome to Ana, Alex and Lili!

There is still lots to do before November: ON THE EDGE will bring you world premieres, original productions, international guest performances and, of course, plenty of contemporary circus. We can’t wait to share it all with you.

Was ist das ON THE EDGE Festival?

ON THE EDGE ist Wien erstes internationales Festival für zeitgenössische und experimentelle Zirkuskunst und bricht mit den traditionellen Zirkusklischees (Manege, Tiere uvm.)

Die Weiterentwicklung von Zirkustechniken, das Hinterfragen von Virtuosität, Schwerkraft und Tricks, sowie der kreative Umgang mit Ästhetiken und Dramaturgien stehen im Mittelpunkt des Festivals. Das Festival fördert und zeigt Künstler:innen, die Zirkus weiter entwickeln und neue Formate ausloten: wie kann zeitgenössischer Zirkus mit Performance, Theater, bildender Kunst, Sound- und Videokunst zusammen gedacht werden?

What is ON THE EDGE?

ON THE EDGE is Viennas first international festival dedicated to contemporary and experimental circus, challenging conventional ideas of what circus can be and moving beyond traditional clichés such as the big top and animal acts.

At the heart of the festival lies an ongoing exploration of circus techniques and an inventive approach to aesthetics and dramaturgy, and a critical examination of virtuosity and tricks. ON THE EDGE showcases and supports artists who are pushing the boundaries of circus and exploring new artistic formats. It asks: How can contemporary circus be reimagined in dialogue with performance art, theatre, visual art, sound art, and video art?

Was mal ganz klein begann, ist groß geworden. ON THE EDGE ist in den letzten Jahren stetig gewachsen – ein Festival, gekommen, um zu bleiben.

Zehn Tage lang wird Wien wieder zur Bühne für zeitgenössische Zirkuskunst: Jonglage trifft auf Installationskunst, Akrobatik auf Stepptanz, Trapezakrobatik auf Konzert, Komik und physische Verrenkungen auf q***res Storytelling. Persönliche Geschichten begegnen gesellschaftlichen Fragen, intime Solostücke treffen auf große Bühnenkreationen.

Mit großer Selbstverständlichkeit hinterfragen die nationalen und internationalen Künstler*innen klassische Zirkustechniken und verhandeln Themen wie Körperlichkeit, Risiko, Identität oder Resilienz neu – mal leise und nachdenklich, mal laut, wild und widerständig.

Denn was könnte besser sein, als neue Perspektiven gemeinsam zu entdecken?

What started out small has grown into something much bigger. Over the years, ON THE EDGE has evolved into a festival that is here to stay.

For ten days, Vienna will once again become a stage for contemporary circus. Juggling meets installation art, acrobatics meet tap dance, trapeze meets live music, while comedy and extraordinary physicality intertwine with q***r storytelling. Personal narratives engage with social issues, and large-scale productions stand alongside intimate solo performances.

Bringing together artists from Austria and across Europe, ON THE EDGE celebrates bold ideas and fearless experimentation. By reimagining traditional circus techniques, the artists offer fresh perspectives on physicality, risk, identity, and resilience — sometimes quietly contemplative, sometimes loud, wild, and unapologetic.

What better way to discover new perspectives than together?

Rückblick auf die Residency der französischen Compagnie La Norma

Vom 13. bis zum 21. April arbeiteten Martina Monnicchi, Sofia Zambrano, Yann Champelovier, Nathalie Maufroy und Victor Marre-Cast im Rahmen von an ihrem neuen Stück „Scandale“.

Die Produktion hinterfragt das Konzept der Normalität, ausgehend von der Prämisse, dass nichts von Natur aus skandalös ist. Erst die Rezeption, die Reaktion, der Blick des Publikums machen eine Handlung zum Skandal.

Mit Luftakrobatik an Seil, Vertikaltuch und Trapez dekonstruieren die drei Künstlerinnen den Begriff der Norm. Sie bringen jene flüchtigen Momente des Unverständnisses auf die Bühne, für die im Alltag kaum Platz bleibt und laden dazu ein, dem Fremden mit Neugier statt mit Misstrauen zu begegnen.

From April 13 to 21, Martina Monnicchi, Sofia Zambrano, Yann Champelovier, Nathalie Maufroy and Victor Marre-Cast im Rahmen worked on their new piece „Scandale“ as part of .

The project interrogates the concept of normality, grounded in the premise that nothing is inherently scandalous; it is the reception, the reaction, and the gaze of the audience that transform an act into a scandal.

Through aerial work on rope, silks, and trapeze, the artists deconstruct the notion of the ‘norm’. They bring those fleeting moments of misunderstanding to the stage – moments that rarely find space in our daily lives – inviting us to encounter the unknown with curiosity rather than apprehension.
