LOVE LETTERS
curated by Paul Feigelfeld & Kathi Senn
Opening: 11.05.2023, 6 pm

“Es gibt keine Postmoderne. Es gibt nur die moderne Post.”
Niklas Luhmann zu Friedrich Kittler, Rauchertaxi, ohne Datum.

In times of war, climate catastrophe, algorithmic matchmaking, total surveillance, sh*tstorms and hate speech, the world needs love letters. While universal form, love letters at the same time are the most personal and intimate medium of communication: They carry with them confessions, hopes, dreams, desires, insecurities, courage, admiration, surprise, fear of rejection, or ideally the condition of possibility for a dialogue and a future. In many ways, art has similar features and qualities. The show brings together an entirely heterogeneous group of artists and works in various media to open up a complex spectrum of (non-) human emotion and reflect on ways of being together.

TOXIC
@ Ferdinandeum, Innsbruck
31.03. - 08.10.2023

Was empfinden Sie als toxisch?
Und wie viel „Toxic“ steckt in Ihnen?”

Guten Aaabend! -
Der Mainzelmännchen-Effekt bei Hannah Höch und Victor Vasarely

OPENING: 09.03.2023 6 - 9 pm

24.1. - 5.2.2023
@ Gallery Dalston
1-11-2, Tatekawa, Sumida-ku, Tokyo

Opening reception: 28.1.2023, 6 pm

Kathi Hofer will be in conversation with curator and fashion sociologist Hiroyoshi Fukamachi (Atomi University, Tokyo) on February 4, 2023, 2pm.

Austrian artist Kathi Hofer brings to Tokyo a long-term project that had its beginning in a small town in the Austrian Alps. Starting in 1947, the artist’s family ran a knitting factory specializing in the production of boiled wool jackets, so-called “Hofer Janker”, for over fifty years. These jackets were made locally using a unique process of knitting, boiling, and wool dyeing, and were sold worldwide. They enjoyed particular popularity in Japan, Hofer’s largest overseas outlet, where their special blend of local craftsmanship and global allure was referred to as “Austrian Style” and inspired a young generation of urbanites in Tokyo and Kyoto in the 1980s and ‘90s seeking new forms of stylistic self-expression. The Hofer knitting factory ceased production in the early 2000s. Since then, the artist continues to work on the family brand both artistically and conceptually.

At Gallery Dalston Kathi Hofer reintroduces the Hofer Jacket to Tokyo, arranging textiles along with photographs and advertisements from Japanese and international fashion magazines dating from its heyday in the late 20th century. In her installation objects and images have been placed with conceptual precision and artistic sensibility, creating a space of ambivalent time and status where meanings subtly shift in the relation between culture, tradition, and creative identity.
