After traveling to the Arctic with my Chill & Thrill penguin quilt, I finally understand why penguins look so calm ❄️

Life in the North is honest. Comfort doesn’t happen by accident — it’s a decision. You prepare: layer up, bring tea, heat the sauna…

Once you’re ready, nothing feels like a big deal. Then you can just chill and thrill.

This reel is part of my Traveling with Quilts adventure, where I mix quilting, photography, and life lessons learned whiel traveling.

Would you be able to relax in -15°C if you were fully prepared?

✨ Chill & Thrill quilt pattern coming soon!

In the North, people say: “Cotton kills.”

I wanted to see why — and how much.

So I ran a little Arctic experiment using quilt batting.

Two cups of boiling water (both starting at 68°C).
One wrapped in cotton batting.
One wrapped in 100% sheep wool batting.

I left them outside at -18°C.

20 minutes later:
Cotton → 41°C
Wool → 51°C

That’s a 10-degree difference in just 20 minutes.

Wool holds warmth longer. Cotton loses it quickly — especially in freezing conditions. Suddenly it makes sense why, in the Arctic, wool is everywhere.

As quilters, we often choose batting for loft or drape. But in real winter? Material matters.

Would you choose wool or cotton for a winter quilt?

I took the Chill & Thrill penguin quilt north — into the Arctic — to photograph it in real snow.

I thought the quilt would be the star.

But I didn’t expect this… the sky stole the show.

Beyond the Arctic Circle, winter light is something else entirely. After the long polar night, the sun barely rises above the horizon. The land is white. The trees are grey. And all the colors live in the sky.

It reminded me that quilts, just like people, change depending on their environment. In the right setting, they truly come alive.

✨ Pattern coming soon.

This reel is part of my Traveling with Quilts adventure, documented on my blog Patchwork Passport — where quilting meets landscape, storytelling, and a little bit of wild snow.

Would you take a quilt on a trip to photograph it?

Some quilt designs need a wall.
Some need a bed.
And some quietly wait for the right landscape.

The Chill and Thrill penguin quilt was one of those. I designed it for snow — real snow, not fabric or studio snow. So we traveled 3000 km north, beyond the Arctic Circle, to photograph it where it truly belongs.

And something magical happened. The quilt suddenly felt alive. The textures, the colors, the details — everything changed in the right environment. It’s a reminder that context can make all the difference, whether in quilting or in life.

So picture this… end of October, I lovingly pack my autumn quilt for Italy, fully ready for cozy vibes 🍂🧵 And Italy answers with spring. Actual spring. 🌸😂 I remember just laughing and thinking, okay, apparently spring is a mindset! Sharing this little memory now because it feels right—hold on, friends, brighter days and lighter quilts are coming. Full Italy story in my PatchworkPassport blog on MagicLittleDream.com
