Theater & Festivalveranstalter für Theater & Tanz im Zentrum Salzburgs. SZENE also supports artistic production processes.

SZENE Salzburg has been a major factor in Salzburg’s cultural and public life for more than 50 years. The non-profit organisation is best known for its annual sommerszene festival, taking place in June/July and presenting international dance, theatre, performance, visual arts and music. Furthermore the SZENE with its 600-seats theatre and its well-established coffee-shop is a cultural centre with

more than 300.000 visitors and approximately 200 events per year. The full-year programmed venue brings music concerts, theatre and comedy shows, clubbings and parties as well as contemporary performing art projects into the city. It offers artist residencies and provides a studio for creative development and rehearsals. On a European level this support is provided by the EU-subsidised artist network "advancing performing arts project (apap)" which was founded by SZENE (fb/apapnet.eu).

MISE EN SCÈNE explores a question many of us have probably wondered at some point: what could the future of SZENE Salzburg look like?

Over the past semester, architecture students from the University of Innsbruck developed bold and imaginative concepts for expanding and rethinking one of Salzburg’s most important spaces for contemporary performing arts. From new theatre spaces and artist apartments to community areas and creative hubs, the projects offer fresh perspectives on how architecture can shape culture, connection and artistic exchange.

The result is an exhibition full of ideas, visions and conversations about the future of cultural spaces in Salzburg.

Das gefeierte Stück We Solo Men der renommierten Choreographin Ann Van den Broek kehrt in einer Neuinszenierung zurück und wird von BODHI PROJECT im Rahmen der SOMMERSZENE 2026 aufgeführt. Zwischen dem Wunsch zu unterhalten und der Unfähigkeit zu kommunizieren entsteht ein eindringliches Porträt menschlicher Einsamkeit. Mit einer rhythmischen Komposition aus Klang, Sprache, Bewegung und Körpersprache entwickelt sich ein intensiver Dialog mit dem Publikum, der Aufmerksamkeit sucht und dabei tiefere Fragen nach Verbindung und Isolation freilegt.

The acclaimed work We Solo Men by renowned choreographer Ann Van den Broek returns in a new staging, performed by BODHI PROJECT as part of SOMMERSZENE 2026. Balancing the desire to entertain with the inability to communicate, the piece becomes a powerful portrait of human loneliness. Through a rhythmic composition of sound, language, movement and body language, it creates an intense dialogue with the audience, exploring our need for connection and recognition.

The performative installation Rauschen in the Kollegienkirche makes rhythmic gymnastics ribbons pulse to electronic music, revealing natural movement patterns like circles, spirals, and waves as living, organic forms. Choreographers Cornelia Böhnisch and Katharina Schrott explore the dynamic relationship between body, movement, and materials, creating profound somatic experiences.

An insight into today’s workshop with Solène Weinachter.

In a dialogue with the dance scholar Miriam Althammer, Solène Weinachter offered insights into her research into burial cultures and performative forms of farewell: how do rituals develop? And what can dance achieve when the limits of language are reached? The talk was supplemented with practical movement exercises and offered participants direct experience of Weinachterʼs way of working.

A thoughtful afternoon of moving, reflecting, and sharing experiences.
