One of the world’s first addresses for art brut and self-taught art. Der französische Künstler Jean Dubuffet definierte diese Stilrichtung als Art Brut.

Die galerie gugging zählt international zu den bedeutendsten Präsentations- und Entstehungsorten unverbildeter, ursprünglicher Kunst mit der ihr eigenen Formensprache. Seit nunmehr 25 Jahren stellt die Galerie Werke der Künstler aus Gugging und ihrer internationalen KünstlerkollegInnen mit dem Ziel aus, deren Schaffen im Rahmen der zeitgenössischen Kunst sichtbarer zu machen und bisher unbekannte

KünstlerInnen zu fördern.

The gallery gugging is one of the most important international venues for the presentation and creation of unspoiled, original art with its own formal language. The French artist Jean Dubuffet defined this style as art brut. For 25 years now, the gallery has been exhibiting works by the Gugging Artists and their international colleagues with the aim of making their work more visible within the framework of contemporary art and promoting previously unknown artists.

This Saturday, June 20, Museum Gugging turns 20

We will be at the gallery in person from 10am, with a full programme of events throughout the day.

Our director, Nina Katschnig will speak as part of the opening ceremony at 11am

At 4pm, Nina invites you to an exclusive tour of COMICS brut through the gallery.

A day full of art, encounters, and celebration at the Art Brut Centre Gugging. Congratulations to everyone who has shaped these 20 years.

"Bush taxi" by Didier Kassaï. Mixed media, 42 x 29.6 cm

A single pickup truck carries an entire world: people, goats, a bicycle, baskets, jerry cans, even a monkey, all bound for Bangui, 75 kilometres down the road.

Around it, daily life continues in full motion, woven together with Kassaï's eye for detail and his warmth toward the people he draws.

"Storm over Bangui" by Didier Kassaï. Mixed media, 40.6 x 29.6 cm

Kassaï's work moves between humour and unease, between the lightness of motorbikes and butterflies and the weight of armed conflict in the Central African Republic.

It is comics drawing in its fullest sense, immediate, narrative, and honest in its depiction.

Manuel Griebler has lived and worked in the House of Artists in Gugging since 2016, and his practice is impossible to miss.

He works exclusively in coloured pencil, filling every corner of the sheet with small heads looking in all directions, between them figures, suns, rainbows, and whatever else arrives in the moment.

In 2026, Griebler has become one of our most consistently collected artists, with strong and steady interest from collectors in Austria and beyond.

These three works are part of "COMICS brut", and they show a side of Griebler that feels entirely at home in a comics context. Characters from animation and popular culture appear here, surrounded by the dense, layered world that is unmistakably his.

His works are held in the State Collections of Lower Austria and numerous private collections.

Gugging is on ORF.

A new documentary by Thomas Fürhapter takes a closer look at the Art Brut Centre Gugging, its history, its current residents, and the remarkable story of how we have become one of the most internationally significant centres for Art Brut in the world.

The film follows daily life in Gugging today while looking back at the artists who shaped its reputation, including August Walla and Johann Hauser. It also touches on the centre's influence beyond Austria, and our artists' impact on David Bowie.

Twenty years of championing Art Brut, of giving space to artists whose work exists outside every convention, and of building one of the most distinctive cultural destinations in Austria.

"Tintin au Bled" by Didier Kassaï.

Three pages from a hand-drawn comic that reimagines Tintin through a Central African lens, placing the well-known character into the landscapes, roads, and daily life of the region Kassaï knows intimately.

It is a conversation between two worlds: visually, socially, and politically. Kassaï handles daily life with warmth, humour, and a confident artistic voice.
