We have just hung this portrait above our reception desk – and may have accidentally reunited Lara with her long-lost great-grandmother ❤️

Painted by Oswald Grill in 1924, the portrait shows a young woman seated on a sofa in a flowing light-coloured dress, meeting the viewer with a calm, direct gaze. Grill studied in Vienna and Munich and was a long-standing member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Best known for his landscapes, he painted comparatively few portraits, making this signed and dated work a particularly interesting example within his oeuvre.

London, we’re almost on our way!

Next week, we’ll be returning to the at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Once again, we’re bringing a carefully curated selection of exceptional works from Vienna — along with a few wonderful surprises.

One of them is Gustav Wertheimer’s mesmerizing „The Siren’s Kiss“ — a painting that captivates with its atmosphere, symbolism, and remarkable presence.

Gustav Gurschner was one of the artists around 1900 who did not simply decorate functional objects, but reconsidered their form altogether. This signed bronze bowl shows that very clearly: modest in size, yet carefully designed — from its sculptural modelling to its slightly irregular, almost organic outline.

Around 1900 in Vienna, many objects were created in which the boundary between applied art and sculpture became deliberately fluid. Gurschner’s work belongs precisely to this context. This bowl is not merely a vessel, but a fully designed object in which material, surface and form are closely connected.

Precisely because it is not monumental, it rewards a closer look.

Here, time does not simply pass — it glows.

In this remarkable mantel clock by A. J. Pohl, the dial becomes the sun, set within a radiant hammered copper surface. Beneath it, two kneeling female figures turn gently toward one another, absorbed in a quiet moment of warmth — sensual, yet innocent; tender, dreamlike, and entirely at peace.

PS: We had to add the leaves — purely to keep Facebook and Instagram from fainting 😉🤭

New in the gallery ✨

A newly arrived vase by Johann Loetz Witwe, created around 1903 in the striking PG 3/430 decoration.

Its warm orange ground is enlivened by delicate, feather-like iridescent threads that seem to shift with every movement of light. The elongated silhouette, rising from a softly rounded base, gives the piece an elegant verticality — refined, vibrant, and unmistakably Loetz.

A beautiful example of Jugendstil glass, where color, surface, and form come together in a quietly spectacular way.
