We are delighted to announce our selected residents who will be working at InSILo this summer and autumn. They are:

Cemre Kara ()
Huichuan Wang ()
Emanuel Geisser and K**a Sokolnicka ()
Masha Godovannaya ()

This year, the selection process proved to be both highly demanding and exceptionally thorough. We reviewed each application several times, discussed them collectively, and selected those whose work resonated with our curatorial proposal, demonstrated originality, and for whom the residency could provide critical support at this particular stage of their artistic careers.
Our careful and detailed approach was motivated not only by our commitment to giving each proposal the attention it deserves, but also by the notable number of applications written entirely or partially using large language models. In many cases, this resulted in repetitive phrasing and a lack of distinctive voice. At InSILo, we place a strong emphasis on originality of thought; therefore, an excessive reliance on AI-generated content did not work to the applicants’ advantage.
For Open Call 2026, Unfolding the Place. Placing the Folds, curated by Agata Ciastoń, we received a record 449 applications in Stage 1. Of these, 242 (54%) were selected and invited to Stage 2. At that stage, we received 143 completed applications from 38 countries. From these, we compiled a longlist of 26 applicants, sent follow-up questions, and then selected a shortlist of 9 artists for video interviews. Finally, we chose 4 residents, whom we are pleased to welcome to our programme.

For Open Call 2026 – the round Unfolding the Place. Placing the Folds, curated by Agata Ciastoń – we received a record 449 applications in Stage 1. From these, 242 (54%) were selected and invited to Stage 2.

Across all submissions, 42% supported anonymisation, 34% didn’t find it valuable, and 24% had no opinion. Based on this, we’ve decided to keep the two-stage format. In Stage 1, applicants can submit either anonymised or non-anonymised portfolios.

In Stage 2, we received 143 applications from 38 countries.

We’re now reviewing the proposals and will select four candidates. The final results will be announced by 10 April on our website and social media.

This year, we have decided to introduce two innovations in our approach to the open call. Firstly, we have chosen to structure the call in two stages. The first stage will be open until February 23. At this stage, we do not require a substantial amount of work from applicants. We request that you carefully read the open call concept and the curatorial text, watch a video featuring our co-curator, who designed the call, and write a short motivation letter. In this letter, you should describe the relationship between your practice and the concept of the call, as well as your motivation and the relevance of taking part in the residency. Please also send us your portfolio. Secondly, we are proposing a small experiment: the possibility of applying anonymously. Even though we, as a residency, declare ourselves a solidarity project, we nonetheless respect the right to anonymity as a tool against bias, and are keen to receive feedback on this option. We are interested in learning how many applicants would prefer this form of interaction. We would also kindly ask you to share your thoughts on what kind of anonymity you would like to see in open calls in general. This idea was inspired by the practice of blind auditions in music, which we are attempting to rethink and adapt for a residency open call.

„For several years, my curatorial and artistic practice has revolved around broadly defined archives, landscapes, and territories. This includes my projects as well as collaborations with artists in developing their ideas. The residency at AIR InSILo in Hollabrunn allowed me to consolidate this practice and test how my methods unfold within a specific context — one that became both a site of study and a model for how such work could take shape elsewhere. I approached the stay as a case study that helped me articulate how I engage with archives, local histories, and sites. I worked with memory registers — material, ecological, institutional, and informal. I was training myself to look for fractures in the landscape, cracks where imagination might slip in — to shape a curatorial framework and sketch the idea of an open call. This emerged from attention, research, and the passage of time. What remained was a question: how to work with what resists capture, and what forms of knowledge can arise from it?“

The new round of AIR InSILo, titled Unfolding the Place. Placing the Folds, will be curated by Agata Ciastoń, who developed her own research during the residency in 2025.
Agata Ciastoń and AIR InSILo will invite artists to focus on place as a field of relations — between matter and memory, body and landscape, and local and cosmic time. The concept builds on the curator’s ongoing engagement with archives, territories, and landscapes, proposing an approach that links artistic practice with methods of critical observation and spatial analysis.
In 2025, Agata Ciastoń conducted her own research in Hollabrunn, where she tested various strategies for working with localities and spatial relations. Artists will be invited to continue and expand this inquiry — whether by engaging directly with the environment of Hollabrunn or by connecting it to other geographical or conceptual territories. The aim is to examine how different sites, histories, and material traces intersect and inform artistic practice.
Agata will accompany future participants in developing their projects through discussion and dialogue. The focus will be on the process itself — on mapping, recontextualising, and unfolding relations between ground, archive, and imagination.

AIR InSILo is an artist-run initiative, a residency project, and a research space created primarily as a project of solidarity.Over five years, we have noticed that the word solidarity is used in many different ways, and sometimes even in opposite ways. At times, it is used to mean nepotism or loyalty to a small group. Often, it becomes an empty phrase or a way of showing virtue, more about appearing good than actually doing the work of solidarity. We have also seen situations where our idea of solidarity was understood in a service-like way, following what Jodi Dean calls the “politics of demand”. In this view, identity alone seems to justify support, rather than recognising the effort, activity, struggle, and change that real solidarity requires.
This misses the main point: solidarity is a reciprocal effort among equals. By equals we do not mean social position, but the recognition of each other as equals. The shared effort and the work invested by everyone involved are central.
We realised that our understanding of this type of relationship needed explanation, so we decided to make our position clear. This became even more important after we participated in the conference “Artistic Self-Organisation and Networks of Solidarity in Times of Crisis”, held on 3– 4 December 2025 at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
Given the current cuts to cultural funding, and with further reductions expected due to Austria’s austerity policies and the wider European turn towards militarisation, we want to be open and clear about our goals, aims, and the realities of our work. We hope that sharing this will be helpful to the wider community.

Looking forward to contribute to the Colloquium “Artistic self-organisation and networks of solidarity in times of crisis”
Date: December 3-4, 2025
December 4, 15:00 - 17:00 Panel Discussion
“Self-organised spaces and initiatives run by artists play a crucial role in the arts and culture in many countries. They exist in a wide variety of forms, and their characteristics, agendas and interrelationships can be understood as responses to the specific social, political and economic conditions that artists face. Through their collective appropriation and use of places, groups of artists and cultural workers claim and create spaces for the emergence, interconnection and visibility of artistic practice, as well as for interaction and networking. Claiming space is crucial to artistic freedom and cultural diversity. At the same time, such collective initiatives are often driven by precarious working and living conditions with which many individual artists are confronted. At the colloquium “Artistic self-organisation and networks of solidarity in times of crisis” we will address important issues of artistic self-organisation, in particular by illuminating questions of (forced) mobility. Today, a growing number of artists are forced to leave their homes and are displaced elsewhere because of wars, conflicts, political persecution or economic crises.”
