🚨 The kids are not alright.
We’re witnessing a troubling rise in sexist and misogynistic content across social media platforms — and it’s not going unnoticed. Governments are sounding the alarm on the amplifying effects of AI deepfakes, disinformation, and harmful gender narratives that are shaping youth identity and behavior.
If you haven’t yet watched Netflix’s Adolescence, it offers a powerful portrayal of how the so-called “manosphere” has shifted from obscure Reddit threads to the mainstream — reshaping gender dynamics and creating real-world consequences.
Over the next weeks, we’ll be unpacking:
The impact of polarizing discourse on teens’ identity development
The rise of toxic gender ideologies in lifestyle content
Fresh insights from emerging research
But first — what exactly is the manosphere?
According to UN Women, it’s an umbrella term for online communities that promote narrow, hyper-masculine ideals — and the false narrative that feminism harms men’s rights.
These groups often value: wealth, physical appearance, emotional repression and dominance over others — especially women.
They include:
🔹 "Involuntary celibates" (Incels)
🔹 Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs)
🔹 Pick-Up Artists (PUAs)
🔹 The MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way) movement
🛑 The manosphere is not a fringe bubble — it's a growing spectrum influencing mainstream content.
So how can we push back?
✅ Promote healthy masculinity
✅ Stay alert to signs of change: social withdrawal, distrust in women, or behavioral shifts
✅ Equip yourself and your students with media literacy tools to critically navigate online narratives
