🚨 The kids are not alright.

We’re witnessing a troubling rise in sexist and misogynistic content across social media platforms — and it’s not going unnoticed. Governments are sounding the alarm on the amplifying effects of AI deepfakes, disinformation, and harmful gender narratives that are shaping youth identity and behavior.

If you haven’t yet watched Netflix’s Adolescence, it offers a powerful portrayal of how the so-called “manosphere” has shifted from obscure Reddit threads to the mainstream — reshaping gender dynamics and creating real-world consequences.

Over the next weeks, we’ll be unpacking:
The impact of polarizing discourse on teens’ identity development
The rise of toxic gender ideologies in lifestyle content
Fresh insights from emerging research

But first — what exactly is the manosphere?
According to UN Women, it’s an umbrella term for online communities that promote narrow, hyper-masculine ideals — and the false narrative that feminism harms men’s rights.

These groups often value: wealth, physical appearance, emotional repression and dominance over others — especially women.

They include:
🔹 "Involuntary celibates" (Incels)
🔹 Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs)
🔹 Pick-Up Artists (PUAs)
🔹 The MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way) movement
🛑 The manosphere is not a fringe bubble — it's a growing spectrum influencing mainstream content.

So how can we push back?
✅ Promote healthy masculinity
✅ Stay alert to signs of change: social withdrawal, distrust in women, or behavioral shifts
✅ Equip yourself and your students with media literacy tools to critically navigate online narratives

🎓🔍 Escape Fake: Backed by Research!

Did you know that three academic studies have evaluated Escape Fake—and all were published in respected journals and conferences? 🧪📚

🧠 The first study, conducted by our team in 2019 and published at CHI PLAY 2021, explored player experience, learning attitudes, and motivation using an AR escape game.
👥 49 students played Escape Fake at a public event. Results showed high engagement and strong interest in learning.

📊 Two more studies were led independently by Josef Buchner, currently Head of Research at PH St. Gallen, as part of his PhD:
1️⃣ Student Study (n=28): A pretest-posttest design showed improvements in:
>> Recognizing misinformation
>> Critical thinking
>> Confidence in identifying fake news

2️⃣ Pre-service Teacher Study: Similar gains in knowledge, critical attitude, and confidence after gameplay.

🚀 Yesterday, we launched Escape Fake's second room, "Trouble with eLiza," with a bang, in collaboration with Europe Direct Salzburg! We had a blast playing "Trouble with eLiza" with 500 high school students, in an event that brought topics like deepfakes and AI-driven disinformation in the center of debates about the upcoming European elections.

🎮 In "Trouble with eLiza," players navigate through challenging puzzles that illustrate how artificial intelligence can distort reality, weaving intricate narratives around evidence collages, filter bubbles, and viral misinformation. This interactive experience educates and empowers students to critically engage with the content they consume daily.

Following the game, students engaged in lively debates with representatives from Austrian parties, discussing critical issues from Austria's role in the EU to global challenges like climate change and migration. We also gave an insightful introduction, highlighting the content we carefully curated when creating "Trouble with eLiza."

🗳️ We're inspired by the passion and insights demonstrated by students, who reflected thoughtfully on their game experience and bravely tackled tough questions.

The event was covered by the Austrian broadcaster ORF! Watch the discussion on artificial intelligence with EU election candidates (Link below).

If you're eager to trace the footsteps of eLiza, head to our website or directly to the App and Play Store to download https://lnkd.in/eMs9cvZr
The game is available in English, German, Italian, Romanian and Hungarian.

Grateful to our funders for their support: European Commission through the Creative Europe Programme and the European Media & Information Fund (EMIF).

The augmented reality game 𝗘𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗸𝗲 guides the players through digital escape rooms to debunk fake news and fight disinformation for a better future. In the first room players are tasked with investigating a report about a bus supposedly carrying refugees. They will uncover that the picture within the report is misleading and that the bus driver has been targeted by phishing attempts.

By debunking this false narrative, the players gain knowledge and tools to identify fake news and fake social media profiles, protecting their privacy online, and unveil hybrid fakes and phishing attempts. In other words, they enhance their critical thinking skills and digital citizenship.

Did you know the difference between misinformation, disinformation and malinformation?

Misinformation refers to the unintentional spreading of false news, while disinformation is the intentional spreading of false news in order to cause harm. Malinformation is the spreading of news made for the purpose of harming someone. You can imagine the phenomenon of disinformation and an intersection between two partially overlapping circles as shown in the diagram.

The 𝗘𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗸𝗲 digital toolkit and online course for teachers covers topics such as media literacy, digital citizenship, and different ways disinformation is produced and spread. Are you interested in finding out more?
