The gallery gugging is one of the most important international venues for the presentation and creation of unspoiled, original art with its own formal language. The French artist Jean Dubuffet defined this style as art brut. For 25 years now, the gallery has been exhibiting works by the Gugging Artists and their international colleagues with the aim of making their work more visible within the framework of contemporary art and promoting previously unknown artists.

Join us on September 2nd at 7pm, for the finissage of "COMICS brut" at galerie gugging.

Nina Katschnig will lead an exclusive curator's tour through the exhibition, sharing the stories and decisions behind the works of Manuel Griebler, Hannes Lehner, Didier Kassaï, and Basel Al-Bazzaz.

This exhibition brings together four artists from around the world, each working independently and in entirely different contexts, yet arriving at a shared visual instinct.

As Nina described in her interview with Les Nouveaux Riches, what unites them is a universal visual language rooted in paper, coloured pencil, and an unmediated directness presented authentically.

COMICS brut has been reviewed in Les Nouveaux Riches, featured by the city of Klosterneuburg, and has drawn visitors and collectors from across Austria and far beyond.

September 2nd at 7pm is your chance to experience it along with the narrative of Nina Katschnig.

Hannes Lehner's politician series, a part of "COMICS brut".

Lehner draws what he observes, directly and without filter. Politicians, rendered in coloured pencil with handwritten captions, each one a snapshot of how he oberves the world around him.

Nina Katschnig spoke about these works and the full exhibition in an interview with Les Nouveaux Riches, covering all four artists in COMICS brut and how the show came together. Four artists from Vienna, Bangui, Baghdad, and Kirchdorf, working independently, in different languages and contexts, yet arriving at a shared visual instinct.

The exhibition has drawn attention well beyond Maria Gugging, reaching collectors, curators, and cultural media across Europe and beyond.

COMICS brut is on view at galerie gugging until September 13, 2026.

Join us this weekend for Happy Sunshine Sundays!

"The search for water" by Didier Kassaï. Mixed media, 2023, 29.6 x 42 cm.

Water scarcity is a daily reality across much of the Central African Republic.

Kassaï draws what he lives, and this work is a direct reflection of the daily tasks and challenges that are commonplace in Bangui. Potable water is often isolated to certain areas, making this daily chore become a gathering place and a moment of community.

This artwork served as a comic, an illustration, and a documentation of everyday life.

Part of "COMICS brut", on view at galerie gugging until September 13, 2026.

Johann Garber is currently featured in "Arnulf Rainer & Art Brut" at the Arnulf Rainer Museum in Baden near Vienna, on view through October 4, 2026.

The exhibition brings together works by Arnulf Rainer alongside Art Brut artists from Gugging and beyond, exploring Rainer's lifelong engagement with this world. Garber's work is shown alongside names including Johann Hauser, Oswald Tschirtner, August Walla, and Michel Nedjar. It is a significant presentation and a strong confirmation of Garber's place within both Art Brut history and the broader contemporary conversation.

Here is an example of his work in three dimensions, painting skulls, antlers, and objects by hand with the same curiosity he brings to paper.

A selection of his work is available on our website and in person at galerie gugging.

This Sunday, August 2, is our last Happy Sunshine Sunday before the summer break.

Hannes Lehner was born in Vienna in 1986 and has built a comprehensive practice over the years that spans drawing, painting, and three-dimensional objects.

His work is poetic in its restraint. Landscapes, architecture, automobiles, outer space, and figures appear in his compositions, often placed in large-scale, monochromatic settings that invite you to slow down and stay a while.

Lehner works in mixed media including acrylic, coloured pencil, gouache, and paperboard, and his work has received international recognition, including a nomination for the EUWARD in Munich.

You may know him from his Star Trek series in COMICS brut. These three works show a different side of his practice: the landscapes and figures that sit at the core of everything he makes.

All three are available in our online shop and in person at galerie gugging.

Two works by Didier Kassaï, and both say something the news never quite captures.

"Mama Africa," 2021, watercolor and marker, 40 x 29.6 cm. A woman wearing fabric printed with Didier's face, calling for your vote for him as President. Across many African countries, this is a familiar sight at election time. Candidates distribute printed textiles as campaign currency, their image worn by the people they are asking for votes.

Kassaï takes this practice and holds it up to the light, with warmth, with humour, and with the knowing eye of someone who has watched it play out his whole life.

"Polo Kamba" sits alongside it, part of the same world and the same streets A hippo full of personality and confidence.

Both works are part of "COMICS brut" and available now in our online shop

Didier Kassaï picked up charcoal as a child on the streets of Bangui and never put it down.

Self-taught and shaped entirely by what he witnessed around him, his work chronicles daily life in the Central African Republic with honesty, humour, and a depth that only comes from someone who truly lives what he draws.

When opportunities to leave arose, Kassaï chose to stay. That decision is not incidental to his art. It is the foundation of it. By remaining in Bangui through years of conflict and instability, he continues to document a world that rarely reaches the international stage, from the inside, with the intimacy of someone who belongs to it.

His graphic novel Tempête sur Bangui gave a human face to the 2013 civil war and earned recognition at the Angoulême Festival. Beyond his own practice, he mentors the next generation of Central African cartoonists, ensuring these stories continue to be told.

New works by Kassaï are now available.
