Understanding goes beyond knowledge. It is a source of joy as complexity becomes clarity.

At the AVL Cultural Foundation, we promote this kind of understanding most strongly at the intersections of art, science, and technology. By working across disciplines, we connect different perspectives, question established boundaries, and explore what becomes possible when we move beyond a single field.

From May 21 to 25, 2026, Graz once again becomes a stage for the art of storytelling, memorable encounters, and the power of listening. The “Graz erzählt” edition of the Austrian International Storytelling Festival will take place at various locations in and around the Styrian capital.

Festival highlights include the “Lange Nacht der Geschichten” (Long Night of Stories) at the Schauspielhaus Graz, as well as the family day “Fest der Fantasie” (Festival of Fantasy) at the Pfarrkirche Thal Sankt Jakob. Artists from around the globe bring stories to life through words, music, movement, and visual poetry.

In line with this year’s motto, , the interactive art installation “Graz träumt” (Graz Dreams) invites visitors to enter a dreamscape to explore and share their dreams. The AVL Cultural Foundation is a partner of one of the three dream castles, and the Irvine sounds can be experienced in a sound oasis, composed by Rupert Huber. The installation is on display at Mariahilferplatz until June 1, 2026.

The vocal ensemble Cantando Admont rethinks early music through a contemporary lens, drawing new impulses from dialogue between past and present. On May 10, audiences are invited to experience this exchange in “Concert Talk: Feliz Anne Reyes Macahis”.

Internationally acclaimed composer Feliz Anne Reyes Macahis creates powerful vocal music that connects Philippine singing traditions with European vocal practices. Set alongside Renaissance polyphony by William Byrd and Josquin des Prez, the program examines how language shapes musical meaning and expression beyond cultural and stylistic boundaries.

For the first time, Schallfeld Ensemble (Graz) and NAMES Ensemble (Salzburg) come together for a double-ensemble project featuring two world premieres.

In a mirror-like stage configuration, the ensembles explore spatial and non-spatial structures, sound, and balance. The program presents new works by Filippo Perocco, reflecting on fragility and musical essence inspired by the letters of Robert Schumann, alongside a multimedia composition by Sara Stevanović focusing on symmetry and equilibrium.

Two evenings of contemporary music shaped by reflection and geometry:
Spiegelungen I: Geometrien | April 27, 8:00 pm | Schaumbad – Freies Atelierhaus Graz
Geometrien I: Spiegelungen | April 29, 7:30 pm | ArgeKultur Salzburg

“Der Baum” (The Tree) at Gasometer Oberhausen is the 35‑meter‑high centerpiece of the exhibition “Mythos Wald” (Forest Worlds) and reveals the hidden structures of a tree through an immersive experience. Created by Ars Electronica Solutions, the installation can be admired until December 30, 2026.

Beginning underground and moving upward through roots, trunk, and canopy, the journey offers a perspective rarely experienced before. As a monumental light and spatial sculpture, “The Tree” fills the entire interior of the Gasometer and unites art, science, and technology.

The experience is made possible in dialogue with the music by Rupert Huber that is composed specifically for the space and features among others the distinctive sound of the Irvine, a one-of-a-kind analog synthesizer, developed by AVL Cultural Foundation and an interdisciplinary team.

The AVL Cultural Foundation is committed to creating a space where ideas can flow and develop, allowing creativity and innovation to thrive together.

From March 18 to 23, 2026, the Diagonale. Festival des österreichischen Films returns to Graz, transforming the city into Austria’s film capital. A total of 149 films will be screened, including 77 Austrian and world premieres across feature films, documentaries, shorts, and innovative films.

The Festival of Austrian Film opens at the Helmut List Halle Graz , which will once again become Austria’s largest temporary cinema. “Rose” by Markus Schleinzer will kick off the program with a story set during the Thirty Years’ War. A soldier arrives in a Protestant village claiming an inheritance. What the villagers do not know: the soldier, Rose, is a woman living as a man, shifting between identities until a single bee sting sets dramatic events in motion.

Ticket sales start on March 14 online or at the Kunsthaus Graz. Explore the full program and secure your tickets at diagonale.at.

Spring is approaching, and so is Elevate Festival 2026. From March 5 to 8, Graz once again becomes a meeting point for music, art, and critical discourse. Under the theme “Vital Signs”, this year’s festival examines the social, political, technological, and cultural conditions that reflect the state of our society – somewhere between exhaustion and renewal, crisis and collective agency.

For the first time in its 22-year history, the festival will open in the Helmut List Halle Graz, with Martin Moder guiding the audience through the evening. Author and freelance journalist Şeyda Kurt will deliver the Opening Speech. The program continues with a performance by Bendik Giske and a live interpretation of Steve Reich’s “Music for 18 Musicians” by the PPCM Ensemble. To round off the night, Elevate transforms the underground venue “Detroit” at the Helmut List Halle into its AV Night stage.

Across four days and multiple venues throughout Graz, the festival presents a diverse program exploring cultural and socio-political themes.
