In September 2023, I traveled to Graz, Austria, for an early music seminar at the Graz Conservatory. Graz is a city among hills that make you want to sing “The hills are alive”, with grass so so green, and kind, professional teachers Who inspired me to love music again. You can even forget your passport in a café and nothing happens (true story). They also have an amazing contemporary music program.
A month later, on October 6, I performed at Jaffa Port and thought: how beautiful is Jaffa Port, different from Graz but just as stunning. Twenty-four hours later, I woke to sirens and rumors of terrorists in homes in the south. Fear froze everything, mixed with 30 years of memories in Israel. I wanted to write, but everything sounded banal.
Then I remembered: I’ve spent my life collecting songs about the pain of war. I don’t need to say anything new—composers I love most have already expressed it: where there is war, there is grief. Fortunately, the the Lottery Council for Culture and Art supported the project, and now—two years after grief erupted all around, and over a year after I finished filming, editing, and recording—the project “Songs of War and Grief” is finally ready to released.
בספטמבר 2023 נסעתי לגרץ שבאוסטריה בשביל סמינר למוזיקה עתיקה בקונסרבטוריון גרץ. גרץ היא עיר עם דשא ירוק בגוון שלא ראיתי ומורים אדיבים ומקצועיים שעוררו אצלי השראה מחודשת. אפשר אפילו לשכוח דרכון בבית קפה ושום דבר לא יקרה (סיפור אמיתי). יש להם גם מסלול מדהים למוזיקה בת זמננו. הרבה מחשבות על הגירה, כמו תמיד.
חודש אחרי, ב־6 לאוקטובר, הופעתי בנמל יפו וחשבתי לעצמי: כמה יפה פה, שונה אבל לא פחות יפה.
24 שעות אחרי התעוררתי לאזעקות ולשמועות על מחבלים בבתים בדרום. כל הפחדים שלי בבת אחד, יחד עם 30 שנות זיכרונות כאובים מלחיות ישראל. רציתי לכתוב, אבל הכול נשמע שחוק, בנאלי אפילו מיותר
ואז נזכרתי: כל החיים אני אוספת שירים על הכאב שבמלחמה. לא צריך לומר משהו חדש—המלחינים שאני הכי אוהבת כבר הביעו את זה: איפה שיש מלחמה תמיד יהיה בסוף יגון. לשמחתי (והפתעתי), מפעל הפיס תמך בפרויקט, ועכשיו—שנתיים אחרי שהדי האבק של התותחים חושפים את גודל היגון מכל עבר, ושנה אחרי שסיימתי לצלם, לערוך ולהקליט—“שירי מלחמה ויגון” מוכן לצאת לאור.
