The EUYO has visited Bolzano every year since 1983 (except in 1989, when we were touring India!). This began thanks to the shared dedication to youth music by our Founding Music Director Claudio Abbado and the City of Bolzano, and continues stronger than ever today in partnership with Bolzano Festival Bozen.

A UNESCO Creative City of Music since 2023, Bolzano is the home of three languages – Italian, German, and Ladin - with music a universal one uniting the diverse cultures at home in the region.

💛 Each Summer Tour, our Bolzano Residency is our much-loved break from the road, and a turning point as we give the last performance of our first tour programme, and welcome our second maestro and soloist to launch the next at Bolzano Festival Bozen.

🤩 This year, we played Brahms and Rachmaninov for the final time with Elim Chan and María Dueñas · violinist, and welcomed Gustavo Gimeno and Julia Hagen for our first concert of Dvořák's Cello Concerto and Bruckner's Symphony No. 6: full houses and full of inspiration for us all.

🤝 Bolzano also gives us the chance to contribute to its vibrant community music, through 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝘂𝗯 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 in partnership with the Festival. In spring and summer preparation sessions, EUYO alumni led coaching sessions for pupils from Bolzano’s music schools, culminating in a side-by-side public concert offered to the community free of charge by the Comune di Bolzano - Gemeinde Bozen.

🎻 This concert, conducted by Donatella Flick Competition winner Nicolò Umberto Foron, also starred two EUYO musicians as soloists: our Leader Almudena Quintanilla Adrade in the Adagio and Presto from Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in G minor, and cellist Clara Millet in the first movement of Dvořák's Cello Concerto.

Enjoy these impressions from our residency!

Here at Bolzano Festival Bozen it's time for a tour turning point: our second symphonic programme of Dvořák and Bruckner, conducted by Gustavo Gimeno!

Gustavo Gimeno is one of today’s leading conductors in both symphonic and operatic repertoire. Since 2020/21, he has served as Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, recently extending his contract through 2029/30. In 2025/26, he begins his inaugural season as Music Director of Madrid’s Teatro Real.

With the TSO, Gimeno leads a season featuring renowned soloists including Lang Lang - 郎朗, Javier Perianes, Denis Kozhukhin, Pablo Ferrández, Abel Selaocoe, Anoushka Shankar, and María Dueñas · violinist. Programmes combine major classics and contemporary works, highlighted by Carmina Burana, Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 6, 8, and 9, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth, Mahler’s Ninth, and Francisco Coll’s Lilith Symphony. The Orchestra also tours Spain and several European countries.

At Teatro Real, Gimeno conducts Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle and The Miraculous Mandarin, directed by Christof Loy, and Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, directed by Laurent Pelly. A sought-after guest conductor, he debuts with the New York Philharmonic and returns to the LA Phil following appearances with many of the world’s foremost orchestras.

His acclaimed recordings with the TSO for Harmonia Mundi include a JUNO Award-winning Turangalîla-Symphonie. Formerly Music Director of the Luxembourg Philharmonic (2015-2025), Gimeno built an extensive international profile through tours, recordings, and collaborations with leading artists. In 2025, he was appointed Commander of the Order of Civil Merit by King Felipe VI of Spain.

Last, but not least: Gustavo Gimeno is an EUYO alumnus, having been a percussionist with us in 1997!

EUYO musicians come from all 27 EU Member States, and
following our Young Euro Classic concert at Konzerthaus Berlin, guests gathered at a reception co-hosted by the Embassy of Ireland Berlin, marking Ireland’s 𝗜𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 🇮🇪 🇪🇺

Last night in Berlin, we proudly welcomed Barbara Gessler, Head of Europäische Kommission – Vertretung in Deutschland, and the diplomatic representatives of most of the countries belonging to our Union supporting our concert 🎶 🤝

Europe is felt as much as it is governed. We are an orchestra working across borders, celebrating both what unites us and the unique instruments, talents and traditions that each musician brings. Like the European Union itself, we believe our strength comes from diversity: many voices, many stories and many cultures coming together to create something greater together than apart. 🎶❤️

🇩🇪 Last night Young Euro Classic: a sold-out Konzerthaus Berlin and standing ovations for Elim Chan, María Dueñas · violinist and our incredible EUYO musicians!

For more than 25 years, Young Euro Classic has been an unmissable part of Berlin's summer culture calendar, bringing top youth orchestras from all over the world. It really shows how orchestras can be about aspiration, opportunity, seeing the world, building friendships, and showing what is possible when many different voices come together.

Thank you team YEC, Artistic Directors Alban Gerhardt and Mathias Hinke, Managing Director Dr. Gabriele Minz GmbH, and the German Circle of Friends of European Youth Orchestras. You are the best! 🙌🏻

1 August Grafenegg Summer Sounds: the EUYO Summer Tour 2026 has launched!

Conducted by Elim Chan and featuring María Dueñas · violinist, we performed Brahms’ Violin Concerto and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2 in the spectacular open-air setting of Grafenegg’s Wolkenturm.

And that’s not all! there was music all night long, in the open air and in Grafenegg’s stunning new Rudolf Buchbinder Saal. Before the symphony performance, audiences enjoyed a Prélude chamber music programme featuring works by Dukas, Brahms and Mendelssohn. Afterwards, EUYO musicians joined our guest artists for a Late Night Session, ranging from Vivaldi to John Cage and culminating in a collective improvisation.

It was a spectacular start to the tour, and now, we’re on the tour bus - next stop, Berlin.

Join us on the road!

A big day today for the EUYO: Elim Chan has arrived!

She conducts our first symphonic programme of our Summer Tour 2026: the Brahms Violin Concerto in D, Op. 77 followed by Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27.

From the 2027/28 season she will become Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony; she was also recently appointed Artistic Partner with the Wiener Symphoniker. It is also not her first time conducting the EUYO; we also had the privilege of working with her in 2022.

This season, she makes her debuts with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Konzerthaus Berlin, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and NHK 交響楽団 NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo.

Recent debuts and upcoming re-invitations include leading orchestras such as the Staatskapelle Berlin, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Munich Philharmonic, Bamberg Symphony, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Boston Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

Born in Hong Kong, Elim Chan became the first female winner of the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition and went on to spend her 2015/16 season as Assistant Conductor at the London Symphony Orchestra, where she worked closely with Valery Gergiev. In the following season, Elim Chan joined the Dudamel Fellowship program of the Los Angeles Philarmonic. She also owes much to the support and encouragement of the EUYO's Conductor Laureate Bernard Haitink, whose masterclasses she attended in Lucerne in 2015.

Join the concert trail with the EUYO!

We have been in Vienna for our Schoenberg Day: chamber music throughout the city in collaboration with the Arnold Schönberg Center. On the programme: EUYO wind, brass and string ensembles performing music by Schoenberg, his contemporaries and his precursors.

The Schönberg Day is now in its third year: we returned to the Schönberg Center itself, and to the Leopold Museum. We finished in an entirely new venue: Villa Beer, the emblem of Second Viennese Modernism designed for the Beer family by Josef Frank und Oskar Wlach.

Frank’s motto was “Modern is whatever gives us the greatest possible freedom.” We were honoured to give the very first concert to take place in the villa since its recent opening to the public.
