A​lmost 15 years ago, we ​t​ook Google Street View underwater for the first time to document coral reefs around the world. Along the way, we witnessed some of the most significant bleaching events ever recorded, ​a​nd share​d the story ​on Netflix through Chasing Coral​, then ​worked with partners to create , a global plan to protect the reefs most likely to survive climate change.

Reefs have always been central to what we do at The Ocean Agency, and today’s the day to celebrate them.

At ASCC Marine Science, we celebrate every student achievement and empower our students to embrace opportunities that enhance their skills.

We are excited to announce that Mr. Sio Kim has been accepted into the prestigious all-expense-paid 2026 National Science Foundation (NSF) Leadership Class Computing Facility (LCCF) Advanced Computing Student Collaborative (ACSC) hosted by the University of Texas at Austin, from August 1st to 7th at Chaminade University in Hawaii.

As a first-year Marine Science major from Pago Pago, Mr. Kim is a talented videographer and drone operator, dedicated to advocating for his home island of American Samoa. He creates online media that celebrates local culture and promotes the conservation and protection of marine and terrestrial life (flora and fauna) in American Samoa. We are confident that he will make the most of this opportunity and inspire positive change in his community. Congratulations, Sio!

Wrapping up MSC160 with a bang! 💥 Today we talked all things ocean—from coral restoration to deep sea mining—with the bright minds at Marist St. Francis Elementary in Lepua.

It was an honor to engage with the next generation of ocean guardians and environmental advocates in American Samoa. By empowering these students to speak up for our ocean and environment, we are investing in the long-term sustainability of our island home.

We are thrilled to announce the selection of 3 ASCC students for the transformative 3-month Ridge to Reef Program - Undergraduate Research Fellowship. The inspiring interns are Princess Vaoga (Natural Resources), Bengil "Ben" Karol (Marine Science), and Fa'agutu Salanoa (Natural Resources).

Guided by the expertise and supervision of Raijeli Toanivere, ASCC Science Lab Technician, and Leilua Watson from the UH Ridge to Reef Program, these students will embark on an incredible, practical experience to collect water and nutrient samples from streams and the designated reef flat in American Samoa. These hands-on experiences in nutrient sampling and water quality monitoring will train them to organize valuable field and lab data from selected sites across our beautiful island. Congratulations to the students on this exciting opportunity!
