Pequeños detalles a tomar en cuenta a la hora de comprar una katana
Side by side comparison of our Zatoichi and Sasuke's swords.
These swords are classified as shikomizue and chokuto. Shikomizue are Japanese swords disguised as a cane. Chokuto are Japanese swords with a straight blade. We decided to compare these 2 because they both have a straight blade and look similar.
There's a big difference between a hand forged blade and a machine made blade. The hand forged blade started out from a small rectangular block of steel and then hammered into shape. It's also been heat treated, heat tempered, and water/oil quenched so it will have a good edge rentention. While the machine made blade, the blade started out from a large piece of metal plate that is entered in a machine that stamps out pieces of metal that looks like a blade. No other treatment is done so the steel is soft.
• Blade: both swords have a straight blade (chokuto), but the Zatoichi sword has a hand forged, fully sharpened blade, while Sasuke's sword only has a machine made, non-sharpened blade.
• Tsuka and saya: the Zatoichi sword has an oval tsuka and saya, while Sasuke's sword has an octagonal tsuka and saya.
• Nakago (tang): the Zatoichi sword has a full tang and it's secured inside the handle with a single mekugi (bamboo peg) and then glued inside. However, the mekugi cannot be seen on the handle because it's flushed and then painted over. The nakago of the blade of Sasuke's sword is probably just a half tang or rat-tail tang and then glued inside. That's why we don't recommend using the machine made sword for martial arts training because the blade is not secured in the handle. It's purely a display piece.
• Habaki (blade collar): the Zatoichi sword has a brass habaki (blade collar), while Sasuke's sword only has a zinc alloy habaki. Brass is tougher than zinc alloy.
• Hamon pattern: both have a simulated hamon pattern. The Zatoichi sword havs a wire brushed notare (wave) pattern, while Sasuke's sword has a simulated suguha (straight) pattern.
• Mune (back of the blade): the Zatoichi sword has an iori mune (iori means roof), while Sasuke's sword has a hira mune (flat back surface).
• Flat of the blade: the Zatoichi sword has a shinogi (ridge line) on the flat of the blade, Sasuke's sword is completely flat.
• Blade thickness: the blade of our Zatoichi sword is the thinnest among our hand forged swords, since this is designed to be a cane sword. The blade of Sasuke's sword is thinner than the Zatoichi sword.
