This is the wedding dress - worn by Caitriona Balfe in her role as Claire Fraser - from the Outlander TV series. Created by costume designer Terry Dresbach.

While some fans remember how painful this dress looked to wear (that corset was tight!), we think back on it in awe. Terry Dresbach, the magnificent Outlander costume designer, recalls the paradoxical nature of designing this gown. She knew the dress had to look good in candlelight, appear modern enough for a modern audience, and suit Claire Fraser’s sensible character.
The dress took hundreds and hundreds of hours to complete because the costume team utilised an embroidery technique from the era.

Silk Linen, metal embroidery (acorn and leaves falling, with mica), silk Stomacher and underskirt, silk sheer sleeves,.

The dress features some truly wonderful metallic thread embroidery of leaves and acorns. Dresbach and her team even shaved mica (a mineral) into paper thin slices and incorporated them into the dress to add to the shimmer effect.

“if you look closely at the large mica rock, you can see that there are very fine, thin layers. We VERY carefully slide a needle under a layer, and slowly pull it off. It is not easy, but you get good at it after a while, and it becomes very habit forming. Then you get carried away seeing how many times you can slice a layer. But if you do it TOO many times and take it down to only one VERY thin layer, you lose the refracting quality, and it just becomes flat and shiny.
We really wanted it to refract light, so we stopped at two or three layers on each shard.”

Dresbach has said about the process of creating this gown that “it began with a million pictures on the wall of 18th century gowns that I loved and close-ups of details like pleating, stomachers, and different kinds of embroidery. Then we began the process of playing with it. It was trying five different sleeves and looking at 10 different kinds of embroidery. Then we built it on the mannequin, which is when I started really sketching and pulling it together as a singular piece. All in all, we calculated that if one person sat down and made it, it would have taken about 3,000 hours. It was insane. After this was all done, we laughed about how long it would have taken if it would have been the real world.”
