🚨A contractor employed at an ICE detention facility in Aurora, Colorado, has been charged after a woman was shot following a protest outside the facility, according to local authorities.
Aurora Police say Brandon Booth, an employee of GEO Group, was waiting in his vehicle with other employees outside the detention center when two women approached, verbally confronted the group, and photographed their vehicles. Investigators allege that after the women began walking away, Booth retrieved a personally owned handgun and fired one shot, striking one woman in the lower body before driving away.
Police later stopped Booth a short distance from the scene and reported recovering the fi***rm from his vehicle. The injured woman was hospitalized with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.
Booth has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, felony menacing, and unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
GEO Group stated that Booth was off duty at the time of the incident, has been placed on unpaid leave, and that the company is cooperating with investigators. The Department of Homeland Security said no ICE personnel were directly involved in the shooting.
The incident occurred as the Aurora detention facility continues to receive public attention over other reported issues, including health-related concerns that have been the subject of public statements and ongoing discussion. Separately, some elected officials and advocacy groups have criticized conditions surrounding immigration detention and enforcement practices. Those comments reflect the views of the individuals making them and are not findings of the court handling this criminal case.
The investigation remains ongoing.
