Kobalt Launches KOSIGN to Help Indie Songwriters Collect Unpaid Publishing Royalties.
📍 Music publishing giant Kobalt has launched KOSIGN, a new platform aimed at helping independent artists and songwriters collect their share of an estimated $1 billion in unclaimed royalties each year.
📍 KOSIGN provides an invite-only publishing administration service that uses Kobalt’s royalty collection system, which is already trusted by superstar songwriters like Paul McCartney, Max Martin, and Karol G. It allows users to track earnings, register with global rights organizations, and receive royalties in as little as three months — far faster than traditional publishing deals.
📍 This platform could significantly disrupt the traditional publishing model by offering emerging artists an 80/20 royalty split while keeping 100% ownership of their copyrights. While this gives artists more control and transparency, its exclusivity (invite or application only) limits access for some. Additionally, as Kobalt challenges traditional publishers, the industry’s response — whether through competition or pushback — will shape the future of indie music rights management.
