In 1887, during his Paris years, Vincent van Gogh created these two remarkable studies of a violinist—one seen from the back and the other from the front. Rather than focusing on details, he captured movement, rhythm, and energy through a few rapid strokes of blue and green chalk.
These drawings reveal Van Gogh’s fascination with modern Parisian life and his growing confidence as a draftsman. The musician almost seems to disappear into the act of playing, becoming one with the music itself.

In Arles, Vincent van Gogh became fascinated by the extraordinary light of southern France. In his letters, he described the landscape as a world of gold, lemon yellow, and sulfur yellow, and famously wrote: “How beautiful yellow is!”
This passion for yellow extended beyond his landscapes and Sunflowers. In a remarkable group of portraits, Van Gogh replaced the traditional dark background with luminous yellow, allowing his sitters to emerge from a field of light. The contrast between the yellow backgrounds and the blues, greens, and blacks of the figures creates an extraordinary visual intensity.

In June 1888, during his brief visit to the fishing village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, he filled notebooks, drawings and canvases with fishing boats, beaches and the Mediterranean Sea. He was fascinated by the constantly changing colors of the water, writing to Theo that the sea was “like a mackerel,” sometimes blue, sometimes green, purple, pink or gray depending on the light.
But these boats meant something deeper.
A few weeks later, Van Gogh compared artists to sailors navigating immense waters, describing them as “small and wretched boats” facing the great waves of time. For him, the sea represented uncertainty, struggle and hope—much like his own life.

🇪🇸Para Vincent van Gogh, los barcos nunca fueron solo barcos.
En junio de 1888, durante su breve estadía en el pueblo pesquero de Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, llenó cuadernos, dibujos y lienzos con embarcaciones, playas y el mar Mediterráneo. Le fascinaban los colores cambiantes del agua, y escribió a Theo que el mar tenía el color de una caballa: a veces azul, otras verde, violeta, rosa o gris, según la luz del momento.
Pero esos barcos significaban algo más profundo.
Pocas semanas después comparó a los artistas con navegantes que avanzan en pequeñas embarcaciones sobre las inmensas olas del tiempo. Para él, el mar representaba la incertidumbre, la lucha y la esperanza, muy parecido a su propia existencia.
Al contemplar estas obras hoy, resulta difícil no ver al propio Vincent en esos frágiles barcos: buscando un rumbo, enfrentando tormentas y, aun así, continuando adelante.

Few artists portrayed loneliness as powerfully as Vincent van Gogh.
Again and again, he drew and painted figures sitting alone, lost in thought, exhausted by life, seeking warmth beside a fire or comfort in prayer.
In one of his letters, Vincent wrote:
“I often feel lonely, but I would rather be alone than with people who do not understand me.”
These works remind us that suffering, solitude, and resilience are part of the human experience.
More than a century later, their emotion remains timeless.
