Armen Gevorgian is a master in the dispassionate observation of reality. He explores the most intense and dramatic events of life in the most carefully arranged (almost sterile) settings. Armen’s characters are the perfect embodiment of this dispassionate attitude. Their faces are devoid of expression even as they are engaged in life-threatening activities. This is especially apparent in Armen’s “Clash” series. Here the artist examines the most extreme expression of human conflict - war. And yet, the artwork isn’t overflowing with emotion. It looks unusually mechanistic. The characters are fully immersed in the process of destroying each other. Yet, they look staggeringly similar. The only thing distinguishing the two warring parties are the tools they deploy. Armen exposes the naked absurdity of war without overwhelming us with emotions that are already too uncontrollable in real life.
