🌍 𝗬𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮
𝗬𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻, the capital of Armenia, is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, tracing its roots back to the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BCE. Nestled along the Hrazdan River and framed by the majestic peaks of Mount Aragats, Mount Azhdahak, and Mount Ararat, the city is a captivating blend of ancient heritage and modern vibrancy. Over centuries, Yerevan has been shaped by the Romans, Persians, Mongols, and Russians, each leaving their mark on its rich history. Today, with its tree-lined streets, colorful local stone architecture, and thriving cultural institutions, Yerevan is both a hub of Armenian identity and a symbol of resilience and progress.
🔹 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀
Yerevan faces significant environmental challenges, with high levels of air pollution, especially from dust, nitrogen dioxide, and industrial activities. The city’s main pollution sources include construction, mining, transport, the Nubarashen landfill, and energy production. Although green areas increased by 35 hectares between 2022 and 2023, dust pollution remains a major issue, exacerbated by rapid construction growth, with thousands of building permits issued annually.

The expanding vehicle fleet in Yerevan contributes heavily to air quality degradation, though efforts to shift to cleaner fuel options are in progress. Additionally, mining activities near residential areas cause land degradation and air pollution. These industries, along with unsustainable land use practices, continue to challenge the city’s environmental resilience, despite regulations that are not always fully enforced.

Yerevan has made strides in greening the urban landscape, with increased green spaces and tree planting initiatives. However, issues like inadequate tree replacement and the persistent environmental impact of the Nubarashen landfill, and other landfills around Yerevan, which frequently self-combusts, continue to pose challenges. As the city works to address these issues, it remains committed to a sustainable future that balances its industrial growth with environmental responsibility.
By addressing its environmental challenges and leveraging its historical and cultural strengths, Yerevan is working toward a sustainable future, bridging its ancient past with modern aspirations. 🌱
