This year we present a special edition of the International Media Art Festival CYFEST: Midpoint — a series of events reflecting on the origins of media art and its resonances today. Through film screenings, sound installations, robotic media, and live performances, the festival traces a line from early experiments in cinema, telecommunication, and electronic sound to today’s innovations in bioart, AI, and robotics. Highlights include Sergei Parajanov’s early film Hakob Hovnatanyan, sound experiments inspired by inventions in signal transmission, live performances by the concept horse and Yoshio Machida and robotic installations that reflect on human-machine interaction.

«Ժառանգություն և Նորարարություն» ցուցահանդեսը խմբային հարթակ է, որն ուսումնասիրում է այն դինամիկ լարումներն ու երկխոսությունները, որոնք ձևավորվում են ժառանգված անցյալի և ի հայտ եկող ապագայի միջև։
Տարբեր փորձառությամբ արվեստագետներ միավորվում են՝ խորհելու, թե ինչպես է մշակութային ժառանգությունը ազդում մեր ստեղծագործական լեզվի, ինքնության և տեխնոլոգիական առաջընթացի վրա ներկայում։

"Legacy and Innovation" is a group exhibition that explores the dynamic tensions and dialogues formed between inherited pasts and emerging futures.
Artists of diverse experience come together to reflect on how cultural heritage influences our creative language, identity, and technological progress in the present.

Ի՞նչն ենք կրում մեզ հետ, ի՞նչն ենք վերափոխում, և ի՞նչն ենք թողնում անցյալում։ Այս ցուցահանդեսը բաց հարթակ է՝ շարունակականության, խզման և վերաձևման շուրջ խորհելու համար։ Այստեղ հին իմաստությունը հանդիպում է ապագայամետ մտածողությանը։

What do we carry forward, what do we transform, and what do we leave behind?
This exhibition is an open platform for reflecting on continuity, rupture, and reinvention. Here, ancient wisdom meets future-oriented thinking.

Ինստալիացիան ներկայացնում է հատվածներ հայելու հակառակ կողմը գրքից։

The Other Side of the Mirror
Installation Potassium Permanganate on Paper
“The Other Side of the Mirror” is the title of a renowned work by Konrad Lorenz, for which he was later awarded the Nobel Prize. Remarkably, Lorenz wrote this book during his time as a prisoner of war in Armenia. Lacking proper materials, he wrote on paper sacks using potassium permanganate as ink.
This installation presents selected excerpts from The Other Side of the Mirror, recreated in the spirit of Lorenz’s original writing process.

Երեք թռչնի բներ, պատրաստված հայելիներից, դառնում են ոչ միայն խորհրդանիշներ, այլև հարցադրումներ։
Բույնը՝ որպես տնակի խորհրդանիշ, հայելին՝ որպես ինքնադիտարկման գործիք։
Դիտողը, մոտենալով, տեսնում է ինքն իրեն այդ տնակի ներսում և ակամա հարց է առաջանում․
Ի՞նչ դեր ունեմ ես այդ տնակում՝ ստեղծողի՞, թե՞ ավիրողի։
Այս գործը հրավիրում է խորհելու մեր վերաբերմունքի մասին բնության և շրջակա միջավայրի հանդեպ։
Հայելիները հիշեցնում են՝ բնությունը պարզապես լանդշաֆտ չէ. այն մենք ենք՝ մեր քայլերը, մեր ընտրությունները։
Եվ եթե երբևէ կարող էինք անտարբեր անցնել կողքով, ապա այսուհետ՝ այլևս չենք կարող,
քանի որ հայելու միջով մեզ է նայում մեր իսկ հայացքը։

Three bird nests, made of mirrors, become not only symbols but also questions.
The nest stands as a symbol of home; the mirror, as a tool for self-reflection.
As the viewer approaches, they see themselves inside this tiny home, and an inevitable question arises:
What is my role within this home — am I its creator, or its destroyer?
This work invites us to reflect on our relationship with nature and the environment.
The mirrors remind us that nature is not merely a landscape; it is us — our actions, our choices.
And if once we could walk by indifferently, now we no longer can,
because in the mirror, it is our own gaze staring back at us.

Oliver Zwink

The space of doubt: Ambiguity in Spatial Experience
In his talk, artist Oliver Zwink introduces his own work by revisiting two photographs—one showing a car transgressing into the image of a landscape, the other depicting a sinkhole in Guatemala City. These images serve as a starting point to examine how spatial ambiguity in artworks can create presence by evoking an almost three-dimensional, haptic perception in the viewer’s mind. What is it, what the viewer really allows to immerse in artworks: the perfect illusion or the strong presence of ambiguity inherent in spatial experience?

Օլիվեր Ցվինկը արվեստագետ է և Բեռլինի Պեստալոցի-Ֆրյոբել Հաուսի սոցիալական մանկավարժության մասնագիտական դպրոցում գեղարվեստի և մեդիա կրթության դասախոս։ 2010-11 թվականներին նա Մայնցի կիրառական արվեստների համալսարանում նկարչության հրավիրված պրոֆեսոր էր, իսկ 2002-2008 թվականներին՝ Վայմարի Բաուհաուս համալսարանի նկարչական պրակտիկայի դասախոս։ Նա արվեստի կրթությունը ստացել Շտուտգարտում, Ֆրայբուրգում, Կասելում և Լոնդոնում, որտեղ 1998 թվականին ստացել է մագիստրոսի կոչում Գոլդսմիթս քոլեջում: 1995 թվականից անհատական և խմբակային ցուցահանդեսներ է ունեցել Գերմանիայում և արտերկրում։
Նրա աշխատանքները հիմնված են աբստրակտ բնանկարչության վրա: Լոնդոնի Գոլդսմիթս քոլեջն ավարտելուց հետո նա սկսել է աշխատել քաղաքային տարածքի հետ՝ միաժամանակ ընդլայնելով իր աշխատանքը տարբեր մոտեցումներով՝ տարբեր միջոցներով: Նկարներում, կոլաժներում, ֆիլմերում, լուսանկարներում և ինստալյացիաներում նրա աշխատանքները հիմնականում վերաբերում էին քաղաքային տեղանքին՝ ընդգծելով մտավոր, սոցիալական և ճարտարապետական տարածքի փոխկախվածությունը: Վերջին աշխատանքները կրկին կենտրոնանում են գեղանկարչության և գծանկարչության վրա, որտեղ ֆիզիկական և տեղագրական տարրերը միաձուլվում են՝ ստեղծելով գրեթե սյուրռեալիստական բնանկարներ:

Oliver Zwink is an artist and a lecturer for Fine Art and Media Education at the Vocational School of Social Pedagogy of the Pestalozzi-Fröbel Haus in Berlin. From 2010-11 he was a Visiting Professor for Drawing at the University of Applied Arts in Mainz and a Lecturer for expanded Painting Practice at the Bauhaus University Weimar from 2002-2008. He studied Fine Art in Stuttgart, Freiburg, Kassel and London where he graduated with an MA at Goldsmiths College in 1998. Since 1995 solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad.
His work is rooted in abstract landscape painting. Since graduating from Goldsmiths College London, he started work engaging with urban space, simultaneously expanding his work within different approaches in a variety of media. In drawings, collages, films, photographs and installations his work mostly approached the urban terrain, highlighting the interdependence of mental, social and architectural space. Recent works again concentrate on painting and drawing, in which physical and topographical elements come together to form almost surreal landscapes.

Sandra Schramke has been Professor of Scenography and Curatorial Practice / Spatialization of Knowledge at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design Kiel since 2017. 2016/17 PostDoc leader in the focus area “Form Process and Modeling” in the Cluster of Excellence “Image Knowledge Gestaltung”. 2014/15 Substitute professor at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design Kiel. From 2009 to 2016 research assistant at the Chair of History of Culture and Knowledge at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Previously worked as an architect. 2009 doctorate on the subject of “The exhibition architecture of Charles and Ray Eames 1959 to 1964/65”. 2002 - 2008 Research assistant at the Faculty of Architecture at the Bauhaus University Weimar. 1995 - 2002 practicing architect in Germany and Spain. 1989 - 1995 Studied architecture and urban planning at the TU Dortmund.

«Ժամանակի Հյուսվածքները» խմբային ցուցահանդես է, որը ուսումնասիրում է, թե ինչպես է ժամանակը թողնում իր հետքը ֆիզիկական աշխարհում, հիշողության, մշակույթի և ինքնության վրա։ Տարբեր արվեստների միջոցով՝ ցուցահանդեսը ներկայացնում է ժամանակը ոչ որպես գծային ընթացք, այլ որպես շերտավորված, շոշափելի և հաճախ կոտրված փորձառություն։
Յուրաքանչյուր գործ ներկայացնում է ժամանակի հետքը՝ մակերևույթների մաշվածություն, հիշողության խամրում, պատմության կուտակում կամ ավանդույթի կրկնություն։ Արվեստագետներն անդրադառնում են անձնական, հավաքական կամ երկրաբանական ժամանակային շրջանակներին՝ բացահայտելով, թե ինչպես է անցյալը պահպանվում, աղավաղվում կամ վերակենդանացվում ներկայի մեջ։
"Textures of Time" is a group exhibition that explores how time imprints itself on the physical world, memory, culture, and identity. Through diverse artistic practices—the exhibition examines time not as a linear passage, but as a layered, tactile, and often fragmented experience.
Each work reveals time’s residue: the erosion of surfaces, the fading of memory, the accumulation of history, or the looping patterns of tradition. Artists engage with personal, collective, or geological timeframes, revealing how the past is preserved, distorted, or reanimated in the present.

«Արևելքի և Արևմուտքի միջև՝ Մարկոս Գրիգորյան և Համլետ Հովսեփյան»

Ցուցահանդեսը ուսումնասիրում է երկու նշանավոր հայ արվեստագետների՝ Մարկոս Գրիգորյանի և Համլետ Հովսեփյանի ստեղծագործական ուղիները և երկխոսությունը, ովքեր իրենց արվեստում անդրադարձել են մշակութային ինքնության, ավանդույթի և ժամանակակիցության հատման կետերին։ Նրանք յուրահատուկ կերպով համադրել են հայկական ժառանգությունը և գլոբալ արդի արվեստի ուղղությունները՝ արտացոլելով Արևելքի արմատները և Արևմուտքի նորարարությունը։
Ցուցահանդեսը առանձնացնում է, թե ինչպես է յուրաքանչյուր արվեստագետ համադրել արևելյան խորհրդանիշներ, մոտիվներ և փիլիսոփայություն արևմտյան մոդեռնիստական տեխնիկայի հետ՝ ընդգծելով ինքնության և արվեստի լեզվի հոսունությունը գլոբալիզացված աշխարհում։
Գրիգորյանի և Հովսեփյանի գործերը հրավիրում են դիտորդին խորհելու հիշողության, արտագաղթի, մշակութային գոյատևման և վերածննդի թեմաների շուրջ՝ դրանք հասկանալի և համաշխարհային պատմություններ են։

"Between East and West: The Works of Marcos Grigorian & Hamlet Hovsepyan"

"Between East and West" explores the artistic journeys and creative dialogues of two seminal Armenian artists—Marcos Grigorian and Hamlet Hovsepyan—who navigate the crossroads of cultural identity, tradition, and modernity. Both artists uniquely blend influences from their Armenian heritage with global contemporary art movements, reflecting a vibrant synthesis between Eastern roots and Western artistic innovation.
The exhibition highlights how each artist integrates Eastern motifs, symbols, and philosophies with Western modernist techniques, illustrating the fluidity of identity and artistic language in a globalized world.
Through their works, Grigorian and Hovsepyan invite viewers to reflect on themes of memory, exile, cultural survival, and renewal—universal narratives that resonate across boundaries.

Gyumri Art Week 4-րդ փառատոնը նվիրված է ժամանակակից արվեստի առաջամարտիկ, հայ նշանավոր արվեստագետ և մտածող Մարկոս Գրիգորյանի (1925–2007) ծննդյան 100-ամյակին։
Մարկոս Գրիգորյանի անունը առանցքային տեղ է զբաղեցնում հայկական ժամանակակից արվեստի պատմության մեջ։ Նրա ստեղծագործությունն ու գաղափարական ժառանգությունը սերտորեն կապված են բնության, հողի, նյութի և մշակութային ինքնության թեմաների հետ։ Նրա գործերում հաճախ շեշտադրվում է մարդու և շրջակա միջավայրի խորը փոխկապվածությունը։ Հենց այս արժեքներից ներշնչված՝ Գյումրու արվեստի շաբաթվա այս տարվա թողարկումը կրում է Մարկոս Գրիգորյանի անունը՝ ի նշան հարգանքի և որպես գաղափարական կողմնացույցի։

The 4th edition of the Gyumri Art Week international festival is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Marcos Grigorian (1925–2007), a prominent Armenian artist, thinker, and pioneer of contemporary art.
The name of Marcos Grigorian (1925–2007) holds a central place in the history of Armenian contemporary art, closely tied to themes of nature, earth, material, and cultural identity. His work often explored the deep interconnection between humanity and the environment. Inspired by these principles, the 4th Gyumri Art Week is named in his honor-as a tribute and conceptual compass.
