OCHRE AT 3daysofdesign

For our first participation in 3daysofdesign, we present A Path of Gestures, an exhibition bringing together The Grains (2025) and Prelude (2020), two collections developed through collaborations between Armenian artists and artisans.

Through textiles, ceramics, embroidery, and wool, the exhibition explores how artistic ideas are shaped through the gestures of the hand, through making, repetition, transmission, and care.

Rooted in Armenian material culture, the exhibition reflects a deep awareness of the fragility of materiality, a sensibility that continues to guide how objects are conceived and made.

Idea & Development: Anush Zeinalian
Artists: Anush Ghukasyan, Aleksey Manukyan
Artisan Collaboration: Maral Sheuhmelian Berberian; women artisans of Goris Handmade, Syunik region; Amasia Wool Factory, Shirak region
Natural Dyeing: Woolway Yarn, Yerevan
Architect: Arsen Karapetyan, d’Arvestanots Architectural Studio
Graphic Design: Gohar Martirosyan

With special thanks to Gerard and Susanne Kelian for generously hosting the exhibition.

OCHRE's participation in 3daysofdesign is supported by Afeyan Initiatives for Armenia (AIFA) in tribute to Anaïs Afeyan (1925-2004), whose roots trace back to Ourfa — honoring the heritage, creativity, and enduring resilience of Armenians who survived the Genocide.

Our sincere thanks to the Embassy of Armenia to Denmark (with residence in Stockholm), the Danish Cultural Institute, former Ambassador Hrachya Aghajanyan, The H. Hovnanian Family Foundation and its Armenian Fellowships program, Nera Project, and Astronomer Gin for their generous support.

We’re happy to share that OCHRE, together with our co founder Anush Zeinalian, joined this year’s XTANT, a festival that takes place annually in Palma de Mallorca.

We had been following the festival for quite some time through the newsletter, where the festival’s founder, Kavita Parmar, shares her thoughts, reflections, and ideas, stumbling, sharp, unexpected, or, at times, so deeply aligned with our own reflections that they felt like our own words.

We arrived with many expectations: to share our work, to learn from others’ experiences, to find inspiration, and to develop new approaches and ideas for collaboration.
And indeed, we did all of that.

But it went beyond.

For five days, the space was shared, co created, and continuously transformed through celebration, a celebration of what human hands, eyes, and hearts are capable of; a celebration of each other’s diversities; a profound curiosity without exotification.

Perhaps the island itself also had something to say in this. We did not have much time to explore Mallorca beyond XTANT. Instead, we lived within the magnificent 14th century palace of Can Vivot, which felt somehow suspended at the crossroads of the world.

At times magical, almost fairy tale like: extraordinary textiles, people heroes crossing the inner patio, light and wind moving through the space.

People working to revive, support, and nurture their communities. People working to ensure transparent, respectful, and regenerative practices.
Work that honours land, culture, and craft as living systems of value.

These are the temples Kavita builds together with her friends, volunteers (you should have seen the volunteers!), and all those who believe in the value of an object created by humans for humans, with respect and care. XTANT showed us that we can celebrate one another, not merely coexist.

Thank you to Kavita Parmar, to all the volunteers and participants, and to our long time collaborator Maral Sheuhmelian Berberian, an incredible artisan, who shared this journey with us.

It was also a true pleasure to see our fellow Armenian brand, The Rug Code by Kyle Khandikian participating through the arm.wool Association, alongside the wonderful Robert Meeder, a board member of the Association, whose dedication and expertise continue to support and strengthen Armenia’s wool industry.

We are back in Armenia, reflecting on the encounters we had, the conversations, and the shared time and space that continue to nurture our practice.

We would like to thank and for their support.

This exchange was made possible with the financial assistance of the European Union. The views expressed herein can in no way be taken to reflect the official views of the European Union.

We’re so excited to share that OCHRE is part of this year’s XTANT, a festival founded by Kavita Parmar and dedicated to textiles and artisanship.

We’ve been following XTANT over the past years, inspired by the power of its community and its belief in creations made by the human hand — with attention, intention, and an attitude of care.

In one of her newsletters, Kavita Parmar shared:

“More than ever before, rather than being treated as a method of production, artisanry is in a larger part artistic. The point is still to make something useful, but with factories capable of pushing out volume measured in shirts per minute, the utility of an artisanal piece can’t afford to be its only value any longer.”

We’re here to explore the power of artisanry, discover the work of fellow artisans, and share our own.

The image is from the setup of the display: presenting 80 artisans collectively, in dialogue.
