In June 2026, Galeria e Bregdetit proposes a twin exhibition unfolding across two shores, the Albanian Riviera and Basel Social Club.

The projects are conceived as a single curatorial argument staged in two registers. In Vlora, "A Country without Olive Trees is Not a Country" addresses the transformation of the South, its beaches, mountains, and ancient groves, through the position of a witness of its transformation who refuses to remain a silent observer. The olive tree and the flamingo become both marker and casualty of development, a living archive uprooted in the name of speed, branding, and investment.

In Basel, "An Office without a View is not an Office" inverts the lens. If landscape is sacrificed for progress, what happens when the view becomes a condition of productivity? The “office with a seaview” is the contemporary fantasy of productive escape, the laptop in paradise, the horizon as wellness feature. The installation in Basel treats this fantasy not as freedom, but as a mechanism that expands work into the world, converting coastlines into amenities and longing into optimization.

When we lose the places that define us, we lose twice. First when we fail to protect them, and again when we can no longer recognize ourselves without them.

Today, that means refusing to keep our eyes closed to the violence being imposed on some of the most fragile corners of Albania. It means recognizing that places such as Zvërnec, Sazan, and the wider landscapes of Albania are not empty territories awaiting development, but living environments shaped by memory, ecology, and collective belonging.

This unique natural inheritance has been the reason for existence for Galeria e Bregdetit, which for eight years has directly worked with the natural environment of this region through the creation of site-specific artworks, situated artist residencies, educational public programmes, and collaborations with environmental protection groups. These practices have sought to support preservation, and create forms of cultural engagement bound to the Bay of Vlora. To damage or enclose it is therefore not only to wound the environment, but to weaken the cultural imagination through which generations have understood themselves and their place in the world.

Zvërnec is one of the clearest expressions of this bond between nature, memory, and culture. Set within the wider Vjosa-Narta landscape, it brings together lagoon, pine forest, saltpans, wetlands, islands, bird habitats, monastic heritage, and the lived histories of the communities of the Vlora region. Its value cannot be reduced to simple postcard scenery, nor to a tabula rasa awaiting investment. 

We therefore support artists, cultural workers, and all situated communities who have found meaning in this territory to look clearly at what is happening and to act before we can no longer recognize ourselves.

The future of these Sazan, Zvërnec, Vlora, and Albania must not be decided through force, enclosure, or speculative interests, but through the voices of the people and the communities who live with their consequences. This country is moving forward at great speed and we are here to support this journey, but it is a path that must be carved with transparency and accountability.

An exhibition which has been many years in the making, we begin the 2026 season of exhibitions with a solo show by Driton Selmani anchoring his practice on the shoreline of Southern Albania, a territory he has consistently documented throughout decades of calling it a second home. Join us for the sunset at Galeria e Bregdetit on June 6th.

Artists who engage with ecofeminist concepts today combine values of diversity, coexistence between human and more-than-human species, and social justice with feminist discourses and artistic methods. Art becomes a place or mechanism that promotes healing, regeneration, ecological knowledge, and awareness.

The symposium takes as its starting point the exchange project “Songs of Serpents – Ecopoetic Zones”, which connects artist residencies in peripheral locations in Germany, Italy, Albania, Ukraine, and Lithuania. The network promotes transdisciplinary research at the intersection of art, ecology, and ecofeminism(s).
