Word Crossing🚶‍♂️

A bit of a fun, practical variation on a word ladder that could also be incorporated into a bit of small word play. Easily adapted to suit your focus. It could be decodable words, tricky words or just graphemes.

I used a strip of cardboard and then coloured each alternating section in black marker pen. I then wrote the words on with either the marker pen or white chalk pen. Children move a toy figure along the crossing reading the words as they do. All the words I used here would be suitable for a child working in Phase 4 as they include the adjacent consonants 'st' as in 'stop' and 'step'. Check out my 'Why bother with Phase 4?' post a little further down the page.

If you cover it in sticky back plastic, or the whole thing in Sellotape, it then becomes a whiteboard and you can rub the words out and change your focus.

To add a little motivation and challenge I also put three boxes at the end. Children can time how long it takes for them to cross and record in the box. Next time they could try and see if they can beat their score.

Blending - Set 2

⭐Most major phonics schemes will not teach letters in alphabetical order. This is so that as soon as children are taught the first four letters and their sounds they can begin to blend those sounds together to form words.

⭐Blending requires children to recognise the graphemes within a word, say the corresponding sounds and then merge all those sounds together to form a word.

⭐Try to avoid putting an 'uh' at the end of the sounds, so not 'muh', 'luh' and 'suh' but 'mmm', 'lll' and 'sss'. Using the 'pure sounds' (no 'uh') makes it easier to blend the sounds together.

⭐Here I have shown some fun and practical ways to practise blending the Set 1 and 2 sounds. I have also attached a word list containing words that use Set 1 and 2 letters.
